PSYchology

Canadian philologist Michael Wex is convinced that it is kvech, that is, whining and grumbling, that forms the basis of the Jewish mentality, and Yiddish, the language of Eastern European Jewry, is simply created in order to express dissatisfaction, whine and complain.

The verb «kvech» in Yiddish means «press», «squeeze», and figuratively — «whining». Canadian philologist Michael Wex is convinced that it is kvech, that is, whining and grumbling, that forms the basis of the Jewish mentality, and Yiddish, the language of Eastern European Jewry, is simply created in order to express dissatisfaction, whine and complain. This book is very funny, full of subtle linguistic, cultural and historical observations and … fantastically politically incorrect. Like those Jewish jokes that only Jews can afford to tell. A wonderful «anti-practice» on the art of whining and grumbling; each of us can see ourselves in this book, as in a distorted mirror (even without being a Jew and without knowing a word of Yiddish). And you can also learn from the heroes of the book their irony, sense of humor and a slightly detached look at their sorrows. Because in fact, “Life is like a Quech” is about these qualities, and not about whining.
