Mérida Capital of the Ibero-American Gastronomic Culture

Guanajuato, which currently holds the capital, will give up the baton in January 2016 Mérida.

The designation greatly reinforces the local gastronomy as well as Extremadura, well represented this year by the neighboring city of Cáceres.

El Gastronomic Tourism it is located for two consecutive years in the first line nationally and internationally.

The presentation took place last Saturday, by the president of the CCAA of Extremadura at Sewing Museum of the city, and had the participation of the Mayor of the city and the Deputy President of the Ibero-American Academy of Gastronomy,

The designation of the Brand of the capital of gastronomic culture , was carried out in the General Assembly of the Ibero-American Academy of Gastronomy which took place last November in the city of Córdoba.

It will be an excellent occasion to highlight the local culture, so deeply rooted in gastronomy and local products, in order to promote its dissemination on the international scene.

As a sign of the importance of the designation, we summarize the words of the Deputy President of the Academy about it, where it will be possible:

  • Highlight Ibero-American culture regarding gastronomy.
  • Know internationally, local products, especially those with the greatest tradition.
  • Promote the dialogue between the cultures and gastronomic associations of the Ibero-American countries. 
  • Foment the historical-gastronomic-cultural heritage within the urban space of the city of Mérida. 
  • Put On in value the local restaurant and hotel industry through excellence programs.
  • Contribute to the promotion of the agri-food products of Extremadura.

The Capital is a designation that promotes Ibero-American Academy of Gastronomy a through which the values ​​of gastronomic excellence of a specific city of the countries that represent the Academy (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Portugal and Spain) are valued and recognized.

In the Spanish case, the representation is held by Don Rafael Ansón, President of the Royal Academy of Gastronomy of Spain which in turn also chairs the Ibero-American academic body.
