Lydia Chukovskaya fully experienced the tragedy of a family member of an enemy of the people: the arrest of her husband, three searches, many hours of standing in prison lines, futile attempts to help him, escape from arrest, separation from her daughter … About the trials that fell to her lot, to the lot of millions of her contemporaries , Chukovskaya writes with courage, honesty and fortitude. Her voice sounds passionate and stern. And yet, first and foremost, «Dash» is a book about love. In the center of the story is the short life of her husband, the talented astrophysicist Matvey Bronstein, who was shot in 1938. And the book is named so because in the death certificate of Bronstein in the column «cause of death» there is a dash. Many years later, all the gaps in the posthumous questionnaire of Matvey Bronstein were filled: Lidia Chukovskaya was able to get acquainted with the archives of the NKVD and received two eyewitness accounts of his last days. But she did not have time to write about it — her daughter Elena Chukovskaya did it for her in the afterword to the book.
