Since ancient times, people have used the leaves of medicinal herbs, resin of pine, cedar and sticky vine juice to prevent infection of wounds on the skin. In 1882, the German pharmacist Paul Karl Beiersdorf applied pine resin, natural rubber, and zinc oxide to a piece of linen, calling his invention a band-aid (Leukoplast: from the Greek. leikos – “light”, emplastron – “ointment”). Having received a patent for the production of adhesive plaster, he founded the Baiersdorf company, which became the first manufacturer of a bactericidal patch with the ability to heal abrasions.
