The fanged inhabitant of the depths is one of the worthy rivals of the spinning player. It is not always possible to find pike perch in pits and riverbeds; in the warm season, fish often go to the shallows in search of food. Pike perch lives in flocks from several individuals to fifty specimens. At the same time, trophies of different sizes can be in the same group.
Spinner Selection Criteria
Today, mandulas and edible silicone are in the lead in catching pike perch, which filled boxes with baits of many anglers. However, metal spinners have not lost their effectiveness, and in some cases they even outperform soft plastic nozzles.
Lures for summer fishing for zander must meet several requirements:
- narrow and elongated body;
- increased weight;
- work at depth;
- the possibility of fishing in the wiring and plumb.
Pike perch has a narrow mouth, so it does not attack prey across, as pike does. Judging by the bites and observations of the behavior of the predator, it can be noted that the zander attacks its prey from behind. That is why metal baubles are so good at catching “fanged”, they have a sharp tee in the back of the product.
Narrow-bodied spinners have a certain game, therefore, they require preliminary testing in shallow waters. A working zander lure plays both when casting from a cast and when fishing vertically from a boat. This is important, because the “fanged” often accompanies the lure and decides to attack only near the boat.
Greater depth often changes the game of the bait, which you need to pay attention to. The fact is that the water mass presses not only on the lure, but also on the cord. Therefore, when fishing at depths, it is necessary to make the wiring more lively.
Since zander is caught in pits in 90% of cases, weight is considered an important criterion for choosing a spinner. For a spinner, the range of a spinner is not as important as a quick deepening. A large weight allows you to reach the bottom in the promising zone with minimal deviation from it. Wide-bodied lures plan slowly – this is another reason to refuse them.
Technique of fishing
Pike perch, like perch, responds well to jerky wires, so you can take a light twitch as the basis for the animation. Spinners and even turntables lend themselves to twitching wiring, if you correctly calculate the strength of the rod stroke. It is important to knock down the game of the bait a little so that it quickly returns to its course.
A high-quality spinner starts working on the first turn of the reel, while budget products can go astray or travel several meters before earning.
Areas for lure fishing for pike perch:
- channel edges and elevations in pits;
- sharp slopes under steep river banks;
- exits and entrances to pits;
- any relief anomalies at depths from 5 meters;
- snags and logs located at a depth;
- shell ascents from the depths to the shallows.
Pike perch prefers areas with a slow current and the presence of many shelters. The ideal place for the “fanged” parking lot combines a hard bottom, depth, shelters and a slight current. Also important is the food base nearby, where the predator goes to feed. Often pike perch is adjacent to bream. Instincts do not allow a flock of scavengers to pass by, even if its size is too tough for a predator.
Popular types of wires for metal spinners:
- Bottom tapping. The essence of the animation is to tap the hard bottom of a shell or pebbles with a narrow-bodied lure. In this case, pike perch are attracted by the jumping lure near the bottom and the sound it makes.
- Twitch with slow winding. It is important to lead the lure near the bottom, not lifting it high into the thickness. Slow winding allows you to maintain the horizon, and small swings knock down the game and give a reflection.
- Classic step. As in a jig, when fishing with a lure, you can use the Stop’n’Go variation, which is characterized by reeling with pauses. You can perform animation with both a rod and a reel.
When casting or during posting, you can let the lure lie on the bottom. It is important to pause at least 10 seconds so that the fish has time to come up and take a closer look. Bites follow immediately when the wiring is resumed.
This technique is used in small but deep pits when catching a large predator. You need to remember about the size of the bait. For catching large pike perch, appropriate spinners from 10 centimeters long are used.
With high predator activity and powerful bites, faster wiring is used. With slow animation, they try to seduce the passive members of the pack. Playing with bait in almost one place perfectly attracts the “fanged”, but a sluggish fish can simply come up and watch the “dancing” lure without interest in the attack.
In shallow waters, all the same wiring works, taking into account the weight of the summer spinner, the presence of currents and hooks. Among spinningists, fishing on the shallows at night is popular, when pike perch can be calculated by the flapping sounds of the gill covers of a feeding fish.
Classification of spinners for pike perch
Many experienced anglers have at their disposal up to 20 spinners of different shapes and sizes, each of which is designed for specific fishing conditions. Some baits work only on certain water bodies, which is very difficult to explain.
Types of zander lures:
- oblong vibrations;
- preloaded turntables;
- spinners with shipment in the middle;
- cicadas and amphipods;
- bait “weights”.
Each of these types of lures works on pike perch and brings a catch to spinners. Spinners and spinners are perhaps more popular than cicadas, amphipods and sinkers.
For fishing on the “fanged”, natural metallic colors of lures are recommended, in particular, silver. The fact is that an elongated silver-colored oscillator resembles pike perch, the basis of the food supply – a narrow-bodied fry. Also in the silver color in the summer sinkers, which are a flat lead disk with a hook, work great.
On stagnant bodies of water, excellent results can be achieved with front-loaded turntables, which quickly reach the bottom, have high-quality play and withstand the horizon.
Amphipods are small jigs for casting from a boat or shore. They perfectly imitate a wounded fish, which attracts a fanged predator. The beauty of amphipods is that they are ideal for casting and vertical fishing from a boat.
Walleye spinners have an attack point on their body or a fluffy bright tail on the hook. Thanks to this, the “fanged” in most cases hits right on target and the percentage of bites remains high.
Rating of the best spinners for pike perch in liquid water
Each spinner has his own list of successful baits that work in the warm season. Many of them were included in this list as the most effective spinners on the “fanged”.
Acme Boxmaster
The original castmaster is not only the best bait for catching asp, it is also good for zander. Large sizes from 8 grams work both in casting and plumb. Castmaster has a specific faceted shape that gives his game more scope. Castmaster perfectly fulfills the role of a wounded fry.
Turntable “Master”
This model has been known for half a century. The main weight of the spinner is in front, as a rule, it is lead in the form of a fish head. The obligatory elements of the spinner are a rounded petal and a red plumage of a tee. These models can be found in various lines of zander lures. The wiring of this bait resembles the animation of a winter lure of a bale for pike perch.
Abu Garcia Toby
This bait has a history of several decades. The Swedish lure is often copied by other manufacturers, as the model caused a sensation in the fishing market at one time. An elongated silver body with red fins is the perfect combination to seduce the “fanged one”.
Mepps Aglia Long Heavy
A spinner with a long history and a weighted core. Aglia Long Heavy is designed to explore deep-water areas of reservoirs, so the main trophies of the spinner are large pike and pike perch. The spinner perfectly holds the horizon with a half turn of the reel. The weight of the bait allows it to quickly sink to the bottom and catch even 10-meter holes.
Kuusamo Professor 3
An elongated oscillator in the form of a fish with a built-in faceted ball inside. This model has earned the attention of spinners due to its high efficiency when catching a predator at shallow and medium depths. The bait has an extension in the front, imitating the head of a fish. Closer to the tail of the structure is an attack point, usually colored red.
Williams Wabler
The spoon lure has succumbed to numerous attempts to copy over the period of its existence, but not a single replica has been compared in catchability with the original. In the center of the bait there is a rib, which is characteristic only for this type of Williams spinners. Incredibly long service life and the possibility of catching in a plumb line make the lure indispensable in the box of a fan of zander fishing.
Kuusamo Rasanen
A universal spoon for catching predatory fish species is also suitable for searching for pike perch in large water areas. The sweeping game along with the elongated shape will attract a predator from afar. Kuusamo offers anglers a huge selection of colors, which allows you to choose a bait for every taste and fishing conditions.
Mepps Cyclops
Many anglers know that Mepps makes spinners, but in an attempt to reach a new level, the company resorts to innovation. This spinner turned out to be as successful as the company’s traditional spinners. The bait works great at low speeds, so it is recommended for catching a passive predator. Many predator attacks occur during pauses, because the spinner has its own game in the fall.
Mepps «Lusox AG» №3
The famous turntable with a lead fish head on the front is a real find for fans of zander fishing in cold water. The thin petal starts up quickly and works on the slowest animations. This type of spinner is considered one of the best when fishing on the edges and other bottom irregularities, since the spinner allows you to make a high-quality step. Changing the load allows you to choose the weight for a specific depth in a section of a river or reservoir.
Pilker Noise Maker
Contrary to the opinion of most anglers that the lure is a winter lure, spinningists use it for fishing in wiring. The main animation is a light twitch and step-by-step reeling at depths up to 7 meters. Slanting cuts allow the bait to go sideways on the fall, and the balls that are located inside emit a noisy effect, attracting fish from afar. The lure of a collective farmer for pike perch is a classic bait for catching “fanged”.
