Garden work in November
November is a key month for the garden. Yes, the plants are already at rest, but right now it is necessary to take maximum care of them – it is important to protect them from frost and pests so that they can safely overwinter and give a good harvest next year.
Cover the grapes. Without protection in harsh conditions, only 2 grape varieties can survive: Lydia and Isabella. All others require shelter. Even if the sellers assured you that they were selling uncovered grapes, do not believe it, this is a hoax.
However, you should not rush into shelter – grapes are afraid not only of frost, but also of high humidity at a positive temperature. Under such conditions, the vine will rot. You need to cover it when a stable air temperature of -15 ° C is established. And definitely in dry weather.
And before shelter, it is useful to mulch the soil with humus or peat with a layer of 5–6 cm (1). This will not save the vine itself from frost, but it will protect its roots in a frosty winter with little snow.
Whitewash the trees. In Soviet times, a strange tradition developed in our country – to whitewash trees before the May holidays. Then they did it, apparently, for beauty. But the real meaning of whitewashing is different – it protects the trunks from sunburn from February-March. Therefore, it is necessary to whiten in the fall, immediately after the leaves have fallen (2). You can, of course, in the winter, but in severe frosts it is problematic to do this – the whitewash will simply freeze. And yes, the snow will get in the way. So don’t pull.
Lime can be used for whitewashing, but this is an unreliable method – it is quickly washed off. Special garden paints last much longer, and they often add disease protection agents. And yes, they are much easier to use.
Protect tree trunks from rodents. In winter, hungry times come for animals, and they go to gardens – there you can always feast on young tree bark. Most often, mice and hares hunt on our sites – they are able to gnaw trees so much that it is already impossible to restore them.
You can protect the trunks from rodents with the help of plastic bottles. Cut off their neck, bottom, cut along and put a few pieces on the trunk – from the ground to the first branches.
Hang bird feeders. An interesting fact: a pair of great tits is able to clear 20 fruit trees from pests. These birds feed on insect larvae that hide in the cracks in the bark for the winter. But they do not always manage to get their own food – either snow will stick to the trees, or freezing rain will cover the branches with a thick shell. Therefore, hang feeders for them – so tits can survive difficult times.
Feeders can be filled with millet or unroasted seeds (3). And tie pieces of unsalted fat to the branches of trees.
Garden work in November
Sow seeds before winter. In early November, cold-resistant vegetables can be sown before winter – carrots, beets, radishes, parsley, sorrel, leafy lettuces.
With winter sowing, the rate should be increased by 30% – in case some seeds die. And the beds must be mulched with a layer of humus or peat – 7-10 cm.
Harvest in November
It is already cold outside, but, nevertheless, there is something to collect in the garden. For example, viburnum and mountain ash – after the cold they become sweeter. Frozen berries make excellent jam. Or you can send them to the freezer and cook compotes in winter.
Just do not collect all the fruits – leave some on the branches. Birds love to eat them. And at the same time, together with tits, they will help rid your garden of pests.
