Garden work in March
Trim trees and shrubs. In general, pruning can be carried out in winter, but with a caveat – the air temperature should be above -5 ° C. But there are few such days in the cold season. But March is ideal for pruning: it is already warm, but sap flow has not yet begun. So you can safely take up the saw and pruner.
In March, all types of pruning can be carried out: sanitary, shaping and rejuvenating (1). It is best to cover up the wound with plasticine – the experiments of scientists have shown that garden pitches more often harm the tree than benefit it. And it is better to cover large cuts with oil paint on natural drying oil.
Reveal grapes, roses and clematis. It is better not to delay with this – heat-loving plants, sheltered in the winter, often suffer from decay. Therefore, as soon as the air temperature rises above zero, it is necessary to gradually remove protection from them. Gradually, so that the plants have time to get used to the cool air and bright sunlight. First, the shelter is removed only for the day, and at night it is returned to its place. And only after 2 weeks it can be removed completely.
Apply nitrogen fertilizers. Trees and shrubs annually take out a huge amount of nitrogen from the soil, so in the spring you need to replenish its reserves. In March, it is useful to feed the garden (2) with ammonium nitrate – it can be scattered directly on the snow. You can also add compost and manure to the snow.
Set up bird houses. First of all, birdhouses, because starlings are tireless defenders of the garden. On the day one adult bird destroys up to 250 g of pests: May beetles, weevils, click beetles, caterpillars and locusts.
But in addition to birdhouses, it is useful to hang titmouses, wagtails, flycatchers and even owl houses in the garden. Yes, yes, all these birds also feed on pests. And the owls will kill the mice too.
Garden work in March
Sow seeds for seedlings. At the beginning of the month, early and mid-season varieties of peppers and eggplants can be sown. In the last days – mid-season and late varieties of tomatoes (3), as well as cabbage.
Prepare a greenhouse. Already in early April, it will be possible to sow cold-resistant vegetables in the greenhouse, so it’s time to put things in order there: wash the windows, disinfect the soil, fertilize and cover the beds with black non-woven fabric so that they warm up faster.
