Garden work in July
Water the garden. All plants, of course, require watering, but in the garden it should be moderate. Fruit trees, for example, do not like it when water is constantly poured under them – excess moisture leads to damage to the crop, fruits and leaves are affected by fungal diseases. Trees need to be watered only once in July – 20 days before harvest (1). Accordingly, for each crop and each variety (early, mid-season or late), these will be their own terms.
And it is also important to observe the rate of watering. And it depends on the age of the tree:
- up to 5 years – 70 liters per tree;
- 5-10 years – 140 l;
- from 10 years – 200 liters.
Fertilize plums. The timing of fertilizing fruit trees depends on the species – they are all different. And so it turns out that at the height of summer, fertilizers are needed only for plums – they are applied when the fruits begin to pour: 2 tbsp. spoons of urea and 3 tbsp. spoons of nitrophoska is the amount per 10 liters of water. And for each plum you need 2 buckets of such top dressing.
Propagate shrubs. July is the perfect time to propagate plants from cuttings. By this time, they have already grown stronger, semi-woody, and it is these that best give roots. And the timing allows them to grow up for the winter.
Cuttings in July can propagate currants, gooseberries, honeysuckle, sea buckthorn and dogwood. And all the decorative ones that this method suits.
Collect scavenge. Many summer residents ignore this tedious event – unripe apples or plums attacked, and even let them lie on the ground. Meanwhile, carrion is a breeding ground for diseases and pests. Often, fruits fall off the branches because they are affected by the codling moth or have begun to rot. And the larvae do not like to live in fallen fruits, they get out and climb the tree again. In addition, there are a lot of spores of pathogenic fungi on the carrion, which will be carried around the garden by the wind.
The collected carrion must be buried to a depth of 50 cm. Or take it out with garbage somewhere outside the dacha.
garden work in july
Water the garden. Vegetable crops, unlike trees, have a compact root system and often it is located in the upper soil layer, namely, it dries out the fastest. Therefore, watering in July should be plentiful and timely. Approximate norms for hot weather are as follows:
- cabbage – 2,5 liters per bush once a week;
- cucumbers – 1 l per bush once a week;
- tomatoes – 2,5 liters per bush once a week;
- peppers and eggplants – 2 liter per bush once a week;
- zucchini and squash – 2 liter per bush once a week;
- carrots and beets – 5 liters per 1 sq. m every 2 weeks.
Mulch vegetables. There is a rule: the land should not be empty. But for many summer residents in the aisles, the soil is not covered by anything. In the heat, it gets very hot (its temperature can rise to 80 ° C!) and quickly dries up. And to prevent this from happening, the beds must be mulched (2). And best of all – hay or fresh grass (in 2 – 3 days it will turn into hay) with a layer of about 5 cm. Hay helps to retain moisture in the soil. In addition, it has a light color and reflects the sun’s rays, so the earth does not overheat. Another plus is that the reflected rays hit the leaves from the reverse side and light-loving crops (and most of them) get more light. And finally, beneficial bacteria actively multiply in hay – hay bacillus, which releases a natural antibiotic into the soil. And it suppresses the development of pathogenic fungi that cause diseases such as late blight and powdery mildew.
Remove tomato shoots. In July, they grow most actively, so it is important to break them out every 6 to 8 days (3).
Trim the lashes from watermelons and melons. These crops like to grow long shoots and spend a lot of energy on this. But the summer in the middle lane is short, we need to get a crop of fruits as soon as possible, so the shoots must be cut off so that the plant spends energy and food reserves not on growth, but on the ripening of fruits.
And it is also important to normalize the number of fruits – on each plant, leave no more than 5 – 6 pieces, and cut off the rest of the ovaries. They still will not have time to ripen, but at the same time they will take a lot of strength from the plant.
Sow early crops and root crops. It would seem that the middle of summer, the heat – what kind of crops can there be? In the meantime, it would be nice to occupy the already vacated beds – why should the earth be empty? In July, you can sow peas, asparagus beans, radishes, lettuce, arugula, purslane and sorrel.
And the crown of summer is the ideal time for sowing radish and daikon (there are special summer varieties), turnips and turnips.
Harvest in July
In the garden. At the beginning of the month, early maturing varieties of cucumbers begin to ripen, and it is important to pluck them every 2 to 3 days so that they do not outgrow. It is necessary to collect cucumbers carefully, trying to disturb the leaves less and not to move the shoots.
Early varieties of tomatoes, planted on beds in the first half of May under shelter, are also ready for harvesting. By the way, it is better to cut them with secateurs so as not to injure the plant.
Also in July, harvesting of zucchini, summer turnips, early varieties of white cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and kohlrabi begins.
At the end of the month, you can dig up early varieties of potatoes – they are not stored for a long time, they must be eaten first. And the vacated field can be sown with green manure, for example, mustard – during growth, it heals the site, and when you dig it up in the fall, it will become a good fertilizer.
Toward the end of the month, it is time to harvest winter garlic – you can understand that it is ripe by turning yellow leaves. It is impossible to delay cleaning it, otherwise the heads will fall apart into separate teeth and will not be stored.
In the garden. At the height of summer, it is time to pick currants, gooseberries and raspberries, as well as cherries, apricots, plums, apples and pears.
