Garden work in April

Plant fruit trees. April is an ideal month for grafting and re-grafting trees (1). At this time, they can be grafted in any way, but it is important to remember the main rule: the stock must be awake, that is, there is active sap flow in it, and the scion must be dormant (which is why it is recommended to cut the cuttings for grafting in autumn or early spring, then store them in the snow – so as not to wake up early).

Treat the garden from diseases and pests. In April, the sun begins to warm, and insects get out of their winter shelters. They are very hungry, so they immediately pounce on young leaves and buds. It’s time to fight back!

To destroy most garden pests, just 3 treatments are enough:

  • on swollen buds (trees and shrubs) – Bordeaux mixture (for diseases) (2);
  • as soon as the leaves appear (only shrubs) – Fufanon (for ticks) (2);
  • for buds (trees and shrubs) – Fufanon (for pests) (2).

Feed the garden. During the season, trees and shrubs take out a huge amount of nutrients from the soil. Phosphorus and potassium are brought in in the fall, but they need to be fed with nitrogen right now, during the period of active growth, if they did not bring it in the snow in March.

The rules are:

  • apple and pear trees – 3 cups of urea (apply over the soil along the diameter of the crown and pour over)
  • currant – 2 tbsp. spoons of ammonium nitrate per 10 liters of water, 1 bucket per bush.
  • gooseberries – 2 tbsp. spoons of nitrophoska and 1 tbsp. a spoonful of urea per 10 liters of water, 2 buckets per bush.
  • raspberries – 3 tbsp. spoons of urea per 1 sq. m (introduce into the aisles and close up with a rake into the ground).

Plant trees and shrubs. Mid-April is the optimal time for planting seedlings with an open root system (OCS). Seedlings in containers (ZKS) can be planted in summer, but the beginning of the planting season is also mid-April.

Heal damaged tree bark. In place of frost cracks, you need to peel off the bark to a healthy tissue and cover the wounds with oil paint on natural drying oil. Hollows are best sealed with a mixture of clay and cow dung (if not, just clay).

Finally open the grapes, roses and clematis. In March, they begin to ventilate them, but in early April, protection can be removed for good.

Garden work in April

Harrow the soil. If you dug it up in the fall (which is exactly what you had to do), in April, as soon as the soil dries up, the clods of earth must be broken with a rake. Thus, you will kill two birds with one stone: you will level the site and ensure the safety of moisture in the soil for future crops and plantings.

Sow cold hardy plants. At the end of April, you can sow root crops (carrots, beets, radishes, turnips, turnips, turnips and parsnips), all types of cabbage, legumes (peas, beans, lentils), green crops (mustard, watercress, arugula, lettuce, sorrel and spinach), as well as most herbs (3).

Sow heat-loving vegetables for seedlings. In early April, you can safely sow early ripening tomatoes. At the end – cucumbers, melons and corn.

Plant seedlings in greenhouses. Seedlings of tomatoes, peppers and eggplants, sown a month ago, from mid-April (if the weather is warm, then from the beginning of the month) can be planted in greenhouses.

Put the potato tubers for sprouting. This is done 2 weeks before planting. If landing is planned for May 1 – then April 15, if for May 9 – April 25. It is necessary to germinate tubers in the light so that the shoots do not stretch out.

Folk omens for gardeners in April

  • If in April it rains and a friendly thaw, then there will be a lot of mushrooms.
  • If at the beginning of the month there is thunder, then the summer will be warm and fruitful for nuts.
  • If the snow is porous, without crust, there will be a good harvest in the fields.
  • The more stars at the end of April, the more harvest.
  • If the swallows have not yet arrived in April, then the summer will be cool and rainy, and the whole spring will be cold.
