Luminal is a preparation intended for oral use that exhibits sedative, hypnotic and anticonvulsant properties.

Luminal: use and contraindications

The active ingredient of this drug is phenobarbital. It is an organic compound of Fr. hypnotic and sedative effectbelongs to the group of barbiturates. The drug primarily has a calming effect, because it stops the production of thyroid stimulating hormone and reduces the tension of smooth muscles. The indication for the use of this drug is primarily epilepsy.

In what cases should not use of a given preparation? If the patient is allergic to the active substance or any other additional substance contained in the preparation. It is also not recommended application it by people suffering from respiratory failure, severe liver failure, porphyria, and pregnant or breastfeeding women. If the patient has other complaints, it is necessary to inform the doctor in order to reduce the risk of occurrence side effects.

Luminal – side effects

Like any drug Luminal induces side effects. Such can be referred to, among others: disturbance of awareness and orientation about time, place, situation or oneself, depression (especially in the elderly), agitation, anxiety, aggression and allergic reactions in the form of rash. Dependence may develop with prolonged use of the drug. Abrupt discontinuation of the drug leads to a withdrawal syndrome with nausea, drop in blood pressure, tremors, seizures up to and including status epilepticus. When these symptoms occur, you should inform your doctor, even if the symptoms disappear. Because of that Luminal causes prolonged reaction and drowsiness, driving or operating machinery is not recommended. It is worth remembering that Luminal contains lactose.

Luminal –- dosage

Dosage of the preparation is determined individually by the doctor, depending on the indications, it is best to start taking the drug with small doses. In the event of an overdose, consult a doctor immediately. Symptoms of overdose there are breathing difficulties, fever, extreme drowsiness, tachycardia or coma.
