Lugol’s fluid is a preparation that appeared in Poland on a massive scale in the spring of 1986 after the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster. After so many years, many people still remember its taste very well, and those who were not in the world at that time, at least heard of it. Both interest in and sales of Lugol’s fluid have increased recently. However, this trend should not be followed. Drinking Lugol’s solution unreasonably can prove to be dangerous. Why?
- Lugol’s fluid was used in Poland on a massive scale in 1986 after the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident
- The Minister of Climate and Environment Anna Moskwa and the president of the National Atomic Energy Agency Łukasz Młynarkiewicz assure that the current radiation situation in Poland remains normal
- There are advantages to taking Lugol’s solution, but it should be carried out under medical supervision
- Contraindications in taking the preparation include: hypersensitivity to iodine, hyperthyroidism, lung diseases, kidney failure, pregnancy and breastfeeding
- The list of side effects of preventive use of the preparation is long

Lugol’s fluid was developed in 1829 by the French physician Jean Lugol. Poles, however, remember him from the time of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster (today’s Ukraine, then the USSR), which took place in 1986. Although information about this event appeared in Poland only two days later, the country immediately began a preventive action aimed especially at children . Her whole point was to prevent the thyroid from absorbing the radioactive iodine isotope by administering Lugol’s solution.

Interest in Lugol’s fluid
Although many specialists are currently questioning the rightness of this move, the current situation in Ukraine has aroused fear in Poles about radioactive radiation. Concerned citizens went to pharmacies. The data presented by the website WherePoLek.pl shows that in the first days after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, Lugol’s liquid was sold by nearly 50 percent. pharmacies with which the said website cooperates. For comparison, before Our Country’s invasion of Ukraine, sales were around 6 percent. pharmacies. However, on the charts available on the website, we can observe a gradual decline in interest in the preparation. It is worth remembering that the use of Lugol’s solution without a doctor’s recommendation not only does not help at all, but can be dangerous to the body.
The current situation does not require us to take this preparation.
