Although the Russian translation of the novel by Gabriel Garcia Marquez came out as Love in the Time of Plague, it has not ceased to be the most optimistic of the works of the greatest magical realist.
Although the Russian translation of the novel by Gabriel Garcia Marquez came out as Love in the Time of Plague, it has not ceased to be the most optimistic of the works of the greatest magical realist. At first glance, at the level of the plot, there are few grounds for optimism: the hero devoted half a century to proving the value of his love to a woman who preferred another and lived happily with him all her life until he, at the happy age of 80, fell from a mango tree … But colors, colors! The inimitably metaphorical, colorful text of Marquez creates pleasure, informing the reader of optimism and faith in the miraculousness of being. It is even strange how the film adaptation managed not to lose this quality of Marques’ prose. Strange, but understandable: the novel was filmed by the optimistic romantic Newell, the author of Four Weddings and a Funeral.
