Louis XVII: the mysterious story of the young king

😉 Greetings to regular readers and guests of the site “Ladies-Gentlemen”! Louis XVII lived only 10 years, years of his life 1785-1795. I hope that this tragic story will be of interest to you.

Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette

On March 27, 1785, Louis XVII was born, heir to the throne, who did not rule the country for a minute!

Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI could not conceive a child for a long time. But Louis underwent surgery and the queen gave birth to two boys and two girls.

Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette

The eldest (Louis Joseph Xavier) died very young from an exacerbation of tuberculosis. The younger (Louis Charles) would later become a dauphin. (Dauphin is the heir to the French throne, a descendant of the reigning king. Title from the XIV century).

Louis XVII

On the day Louis Charles was born, the king writes in his diary that the birth was successful, as with his son. From this, one can only conclude that the born baby is not native to the king.

Hans Axel von Fersen (1755-1810)

There is an assumption that this is the child of Count Fersen, an aristocrat from Sweden, who has long been considered the queen’s lover. The count also had a diary, which also contains an entry. It says that he had no more interests and affections in France.

Gossip about the Queen’s infidelity was spread by the younger brothers of Louis XVI, who themselves were eager for power. They supported the rumor that the heir was illegitimate. Until now, this secret has not been revealed.

Dauphin Louis-Charles at age five (1790)

Louis Charles becomes a dauphin just a month before the Bastille is taken. And three years later, the Dauphin and his entire family are under arrest at the Temple Castle. At this time, he was already the ruler of France, which is recognized by all European countries, as well as his mother and sister who swore allegiance to him.

Raising a shoemaker

The rebel authorities give the little Dauphin to the shoemaker – the drunkard Simon, so that he would raise him as a plebeian: he taught him to hate his own parents and religion.

The plan worked. Subsequently, this eight-year-old boy testified against his mother, accusing her of seduction and claiming that they had an intimate relationship. Attorney Hebert, who was of little mind, represented the Paris Commune, voiced this testimony at a court hearing.

This blatant lie aroused sympathy for the queen among those present. Even Robespierre admitted this. However, Marie Antoinette was sentenced to death.

He was soon sent to the guillotine, Hebert, Robespierre and other fanatics. In France, power was seized by “liberal” crooks called the Thermidorians. All they aspired to was to preserve the property plundered in revolutionary times.

The people did not trust them and therefore, after the elections, the majority remained with the royalists. Certain representatives of the Thermidorians thought about the return of royal power.

By this time, the shoemaker Simon had stopped caring for Louis and he was in the care of the guards. In the late spring of 1795, one of the guards reported that his health was deteriorating. Doctor Desso was sent to Temple, who, after examining the prisoner, wrote a report to the Convention, which had strangely disappeared on the way.

Dessot claimed that the king had turned into a completely devastated creature, dying of abuse and exhaustion. The doctor himself, after lunch with the deputies, suddenly died of stomach pains.

Doctor Pelleten is sent to serve in the Temple – a zealous revolutionary, but a mediocre doctor. Less than a day later, after being examined by a new doctor, little Louis XVII died. Just during the negotiations for the restoration of the monarchy.

“Challengers” for the crown

There were two attempts to find the grave of Louis Charles (1849, 1894). The burial was found, but the boy found there was clearly more than ten years old. Rumors began to spread that the king had been saved. After the return of the monarchy, Louis XVIII ordered to cancel the funeral service for the boy, since he was not sure of his death.

Louis Charles never had real royal power, but it was he who took the lead in the number of impostors (60!). One of them was Count Nuandorf, who considered himself king, even on his deathbed. The descendants of the count still believe that the blood of the French kings flows in them.
