Looking at yourself in the mirror and not recognizing yourself

Specialists scanned the brains of 17 women between the ages of 20 and 30, when they looked at themselves in the mirror without makeup, at themselves with makeup and at other people. The scientists then compared the scan results.

As a result, it turned out – when the woman saw her face made up, her brain reacted to the reflection in the mirror as if she was looking at a complete stranger.

Scientists believe that the reaction they identified indicates that makeup helps a person to look at himself more objectively, and, thereby, serves to multiply the ways of communication and attracting attention.

The head of the study, brain expert Kenichiro Mogi, claims that this discovery will help develop cosmetics that would allow women to be more active in society.

The research results will be published in the November issue Society for Neuroscience.
