London Hill is a classic London dry gin produced by Ian Macleod Distillers at its Berkshire distillery. The company keeps the exact recipe of the drink a secret, but experts suggest that more than ten herbal ingredients are used to make London Hill. The drink has a balanced taste with bright spicy notes.
Historical information
Company founder Leonard Russell began his career as an intermediary between distilleries and blenders. In 1936, he opened his own company, which for a long time was engaged in trade. In the mid-50s, the first owner died, leaving the business to his son. In 1963, Peter Russell purchased Ian Macleod Distillers, which produced Isle of Skye Scotch whiskey. Five years later, King Robert II entered the brand portfolio.
The company was the first to start producing alcohol specifically for supermarkets. First, the company entered into a contract with one of the retail chains for the production of whiskey, and then the assortment was replenished with vodka, gin and rum. In 1984, the Broxburn Bottlers bottling plant was built.
The company continues to be a family business. Leonard Russell, great-grandson of the founder, is at the helm. Ian Macleod Distillers owns several whiskey distilleries, including Tamdhu and Glengoyne. In 1990, the firm acquired the London Hill brand of gin, which is produced at the Langley Distillery, built in 1785.
Production features
No artificial flavors, oils or essences are used in the manufacture of London Hill. The company purchases natural ingredients from suppliers from four countries of the world.
Gin is produced by double distillation in copper stills. Before the second distillation, juniper berries, citrus peels, coriander seeds, and other spices are soaked in high-strength, neutral grain alcohol to extract aromatics. In 2012, the company carried out another product redesign – the bottles received the traditional square shape.
