Lombardy authorities have applied for a curfew in the region due to the growing number of new coronavirus infections. The Italian daily La Repubblica commented on it: “Lombardy gives up and flies the white flag”.
Coronavirus: Italy. Difficult situation in Lombardy
The head of the regional authorities, Attilio Fontana, together with the mayors of the Lombardy cities, asked the government in Rome to introduce a curfew from 23:00 to 5:00 am the next day, starting on Thursday. During this time, you will only be able to move around the streets for health, work or other legitimate reasons. In addition, representatives of the local administration spoke in favor of the closure of shopping centers on weekends, excluding grocery stores and those with basic necessities.
The proposal on the restriction was immediately supported by Health Minister Roberto Speranza.
According to the press, the regional authorities predict that 4 COVID-19 patients will be sent to hospitals there by the end of October, including 600 to intensive care units.
“La Repubblica” emphasizes in the comment that if the region, which is Italy’s most important economic engine, decides to partially block it, “it is easy to predict that sooner or later others will also apply to the government for an evening lockdown”.
The newspaper also notes that Lombardy’s decision “returns everyone from a psychological point of view to the dark climate of quarantine in the spring”.
More than 1600 cases of infection were recorded in the region on Monday. The day before, there were about 3.
