This living room is in a new building. Everything would be fine, only the passage room and the doors are not located so as to be very successful. Therefore, the decorator was given a difficult but interesting task. It was necessary to preserve the previous zoning and, if possible, use the available furniture.
A family of five, parents and three children, lives in a large four-room apartment. Their living room is conventionally divided into two areas: a work area and a recreation area. The purchase of new furniture was not envisaged, and all changes had to be made by means of decoration. The owners were pretty tired of the coloristic confusion, they wanted something more restrained, but not boring.
- Project author Manuela Arapova
- Textiles play an important role here. Curtains, pillows, blankets, furniture upholstery, carpet – everything is designed in the same style and in the general gray-beige range. As for the pattern, the preference was given to the cage and the strip.
The primary colors chosen for the room are calm and natural: they are a wide range of shades of brown and gray. For the walls, the decorator purchased wallpaper with floral patterns. To muffle the colorful pattern, it was decided to stick the canvases not end-to-end, but indented. This technique also conceals the disproportionately elongated shape of the room.
Special attention is paid to the recreation area in the living room; the lion’s share of the space is given to it. After work, you can lie on the couch with a newspaper. Or you can have a cup of tea, comfortably sitting in an armchair under a blanket.
The decorator came up with two lamps, which she made with her own hands from two old ski poles (with a bamboo base). Bracket for curtains, cartridges and wires were found from the owners. The hollow metal tube was purchased from the construction market and the lampshades were purchased from OBI.
A round clock was hung on the wall between the lamps. The double-leaf interior door was left the same. The recreational area is separated from the working area by two low racks. The decorator also conjured over them.
The window is decorated with thick fabric and light tulle (to save from immodest eyes during the day). Two types of curtain fabrics were used to make thick curtains: a gray one-color one and a brown check. The hostess works in this part of the room. So there is nothing superfluous here. And the furniture is just the most essential: a table, a chair, a bench and two shelves for books and papers on either side of the window.
They decided not to throw out the chairs, but only to change the upholstery on them. For this, we chose a fabric in a large cage with a heraldic pattern. Here it was very important to observe the symmetry of the complex pattern.
Everything in this living room breathes comfort and peace. The old pieces of furniture are noticeably prettier and, most importantly, are in perfect harmony with the rest of the decoration of the room. The sofa has acquired a completely different, noble look thanks to the new blanket and pillows. This happens when a real professional gets down to business.

Rack
1… The decorator came up with two lamps, which she made with her own hands from two old ski poles (with a bamboo base). Bracket for curtains, cartridges and wires were found from the owners. The hollow metal tube was purchased from the construction market and the lampshades were purchased from OBI.
2… Since there are two lamps, they are the same, and they are located symmetrically on the wall. The electrician in advance, during the rough work, brought out the wires in those places that the decorator had outlined. Brackets for curtains were attached here, and lamps were already hung on them.
3… When choosing a hollow metal tube, you should pay attention to its diameter. It should be slightly larger than the tip of the ski pole so that you can tightly connect them to each other. A hole was made in the tube, a wire was pulled through it and connected to the socket.
4-5 … The ski pole was threaded into the bracket ring with the tip up. A metal tube with a cartridge was put on him. The bracket was wrapped with decorative wire. The wires were connected by an electrician.
6… A frame was attached to the basement, and then a lampshade. If desired, the fabric of the lampshade can be exchanged for any other suitable fabric. The main thing is that the lampshade itself is small in diameter.
Old chairs in a new light
1. Chair to.
2… The chair was disassembled and the old upholstery removed. A back and seat pattern was made from paper on it. The contour of the back was transferred from the pattern to the seamy side of the upholstery fabric, leaving a seam allowance of 1,5 cm on each side. We cut out two parts and sewed them together, leaving one side free. The resulting element was turned onto the front side. We covered the back of the chair and secured the unsewn side with a furniture stapler, having previously wrapped the edges inward.
3… The seat pattern was laid out on the fabric so that the image of a deer was in the middle. Outlined the contour of the seat, giving a 3 cm hem allowance on each side, and cut out. The seat was covered with fabric, the edges on the back were secured with a stapler.
4… Then, from another, denser fabric, a second piece of the chair seat was cut out, leaving 1 cm on the hem on each side. This piece was used to cover the edges of the upholstery fabric on the back of the seat and secure it with a furniture stapler.
5-7 … In the upholstery of the seat and back with scissors, they carefully made small holes for the screws so that the parts could be connected. The edges of the holes were secured with a stapler so that they did not crumble. The chair was assembled in the same order in which it was taken apart.
8… Chair after.
For the upholstery of the sides of the rack, we chose a dense fabric from a mixture of cotton and linen. The rack was dismantled. Measurements were taken from the side rack and applied to the fabric.
1-3 … On each side, a seam allowance of 1 cm was left and approximately 0,5 cm – for the thickness of the board. The fabric was cut. The details were sewn from the inside out along the outlined lines on three sides. The resulting “bag” was turned inside out and put on the counter.
4… The wooden shelves were covered with brown acrylic paint. They allowed them to dry for a day and applied a protective layer of acrylic varnish on top.
5-6 … From the updated parts, screwing the screws into place, they assembled the rack. The heads of the screws were carefully painted in the color of the fabric so that they were practically invisible.
7-8 … The free edge was secured by hand with fine stitches. Below the cover has a kind of border. The holes for the screws were carefully cut in the fabric with scissors, feeling for the old notches with your finger. The holes were made small so that they were completely covered by the screw head.
