Liver hemangioma is a benign type of liver cancer that develops when cells in the body’s network of vessels do not multiply properly. It does not metastasize. Women between 30 and 50 years of age most often suffer from hepatic hemangioma. It is related to hormonal changes in their body.
Liver hemangioma it is usually asymptomatic – especially at the beginning of the disease. It does not grow large, up to approx. 3 cm. However, if changes occur in the liver parenchyma and there are many of them, then its size may be larger. It is called “giant hemangioma” and its presence causes severe pain.
Liver hemangioma – what causes?
Main reason liver hemangioma there are changes that occur in the body. Often hemangioma this one is also hereditary. However, the exact origins of this condition are unknown.
Liver hemangioma, i.e. a benign tumor and its symptoms
Occurrence liver hemangioma it runs practically asymptomaticwhich means that it may never be detected. Larger hemangiomas lead to pain and stretching of the liver capsule. The pain they cause is in the area of the right costal arch. Liver hemangioma leads to free blood flow, which in turn may cause thrombosis, calcification.
Liver hemangioma it is not a tumor that ruptures – it is very rare. If this happens, bleeding occurs in the peritoneal cavity. Then there are additional symptoms: fever, pale skin, severe pain. This situation requires the intervention of a surgeon.
Liver hemangioma – how can it be treated?
In the case of liver hemangioma the confirmation or rejection of the tumor thesis is possible thanks to ultrasound examination (USG). The hemangioma can be seen due to the size, shape and flesh of the liver. Additionally, to be sure, a computed tomography (CT) with contrast should be performed.
Liver hemangioma however, it may not be treated. The doctor decides this, as well as whether the tumor should be excised. Most often, angioma the liver is directed to the excision when it reaches a size of approx. 10 cm, continues to grow and causes blood clots.
Liver hemangioma it can also be embolized. This is by inducing necrosis – the blood supply to the tumor is shut off. Special spirals are inserted through the catheter to enable this procedure. The doctor decides about the type of treatment. Sometimes liver hemangioma he also undergoes radiation therapy.
You can also take preventive measures against liver hemangioma. These include the use of milk thistle.
Liver hemangioma – prognosis
Prognosis liver hemangioma depend on the condition of the patient’s liver and the number of tumors. The most serious complication hemangioma is its rupture. Then surgery is required.
