Comments

It is one of the best known and most widely used formulas in traditional Chinese medicine. The Yin of the Kidneys and that of the Liver are the vital reserves of the body. Chronic health problems, an inadequate environment and an unhealthy lifestyle deplete Yin from the Kidneys and Liver. Sexual excess, overload of work or sustained activity for a long period of time, a hot and dry environment without an adequate supply of water causes the depletion of Yin and internal fluids. All our life, we draw on our reserve of vital Yin. From the age of 40, signs of Yin Void appear: presbyopia, symptoms associated with menopause, hypertension. If we exhaust this reserve, we die prematurely. This formula is widely used to treat a wide variety of health conditions.

History

Cited in the volume Xiao er yao zheng xhi jue written by famous doctor Qian YI in 1119. He developed this formula to treat young children suffering from malnutrition and stunted growth.

Research

In 1989, a team of Chinese researchers showed, during experiments carried out on laboratory animals, that the preparation Liu Wei Di Huang Tang (the same preparation as a decoction rather than pills) could inhibit stomach and lung cancer, reduce the formation of cancerous tumors and reduce the mutagenic activity of certain carcinogens. The same researchers treated patients with precancerous esophageal lesions with the same preparation and noted that those who received this treatment only developed cancer in 2,2% of cases after ‘one year, compared to 12,4% for the control group.1

In 1992, an experiment on cancerous mice showed that this formula, administered at the same time as chemotherapy, significantly prolonged the survival rate and provided good protection for the heart, liver, kidneys and blood.2

In a trial of patients with lung cancer (small cell epithelioma), the preparation was shown to improve survival rates in patients who take it at the same time as being treated with chemotherapy.3

In 1994, another team of Chinese researchers showed that the preparation actually increased the production of lymphocytes and inhibited the proliferation of cancer cells. The researchers point out that in China, the formula has been used for several years in cases of esophageal cancer.4

In 2001, another Chinese team showed, in tests on animals, that the preparation was also effective in treating muscular dystrophy.5

The formula has also been shown to be useful in preventing osteoporosis.6
