Little refugees go to hospitals. They are physically and mentally exhausted

1,5 million Ukrainian refugees have already arrived in Poland. Among them are many children who need urgent medical attention. They come to hospitals and clinics with various ailments, incl. infections of the upper respiratory tract and leg injuries, which occurred while walking the long distance between their home and a safe border.

Hundreds of children from Ukraine in Małopolska hospitals

Leg injuries caused by a long walk, colds, physical and mental exhaustion – these are some of the ailments with which refugee children end up in hospitals in Małopolska. Only several hundred small patients have already benefited from the assistance in clinics subordinate to the voivodeship.

Since the beginning of the war, approximately 300 children and 50 adults have been admitted to hospitals in Małopolska subordinate to the marshal’s office. Most children – according to the information provided by the Marshal of Małopolska, Witold Kozłowski – go to the hospital of St. Ludwik, located near the main railway station in Krakow. About 200 small patients benefited from counseling at this facility, and 20 are hospitalized. The second hospital, to which patients are referred due to the close proximity, is the facility named after Józef Dietl. So far, 20 adults and a few children have been accepted here.

“Some cases require surgical intervention”

Young patients are often hospitalized with leg injuries caused by long walking, some cases require surgical intervention. Other reasons for visiting hospitals include colds, physical and mental exhaustion, poisoning can occur. As for adults, they usually need medical and cardiology advice. Some require surgery. There are also isolated cases COVID-19.

The medical point at the main station is provided by the Krakow Ambulance Service and, among others, Maltese service. Patients are transported by ambulance to hospital. Refugees from Ukraine can count on free medical assistance

Ukrainians fleeing the war can count on free medical assistance on the same terms as Polish patients. This applies to Ukrainian citizens who have a certificate issued by the border guard or the border guard stamp in the travel document, confirming their legal stay in the territory of the Republic of Poland from February 24, 2022. The assistance provided will be paid by the National Health Fund from the state budget.

Aleksandra Kwiecień, a spokeswoman for the National Health Fund in Małopolska, announced in each voivodeship there is at least one oncology facility ready to receive patients from Ukraine. By calling the toll-free number 800 190 590, the patient may report the need to continue oncological treatment in Poland. All he has to do is provide his contact details on the hotline. The data of the patient will be forwarded to the center undertaking the organization of further treatment. The center will contact him within two business days to obtain detailed information about the patient and the course of treatment so far.
