1,5 million Ukrainian refugees have already arrived in Poland. Among them are many children who need urgent medical care. Hundreds of children from Ukraine are in the hospitals of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship
Leg injuries caused by long walks, colds, physical and mental exhaustion – these are some of the ailments with which refugee children end up in hospitals in Lesser Poland. Several hundred young patients have already benefited from the help in clinics subordinated to the voivodeship.
Since the beginning of the war, about 300 children and 50 adults have been hospitalized in the hospitals of Lesser Poland, subordinated to the Marshal’s Office. According to the information provided by Witold Kozlovsky, the Marshal of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, most of the children go to the hospital of St. Ludwika, located near the main railway station of Krakow. About 200 young patients received consultations at this institution, 20 of them were hospitalized. Another hospital to which patients are referred due to its close proximity is the institution named after Joseph Dietl. So far, 20 adults and several children have been admitted here.
“Some cases require surgical intervention”
Young patients often end up in the hospital with foot injuries caused by prolonged walking, in some cases requiring surgery. Other reasons for visits to hospitals are colds, physical and mental exhaustion, and there are cases of poisoning. As for adults, they usually need a doctor’s and cardiologist’s consultation. Some require surgery. There are also isolated cases of COVID-19.

The medical center at the main station is provided by the Krakow Ambulance Service and, in particular, by the Malta Service. Patients are transported to the hospital by ambulance. Providing first aid at the main train station is possible, in particular, thanks to the equipment and hygienic means provided by the hospital named after John Paul II.
Refugees from Ukraine can count on free medical care
Ukrainians fleeing the war can count on free medical care under the same conditions as Polish patients. This applies to citizens of Ukraine who have a confirmation issued by the Border Service, or a corresponding stamp in their travel document confirming their legal stay in the territory of the Republic of Poland from February 24, 2022. The funds of the provided assistance will be paid by the National Health Care Fund from the state budget.

Oleksandra Kwiechen, the press secretary of the Malopolska National Health Care Fund, reported on Friday that every voivodeship has at least one oncology facility ready to accept patients from Ukraine. By calling the toll-free number 800 190 590, the patient can report the need to continue cancer treatment in Poland. He only needs to enter his contact details. The patient’s data will be transferred to the center that organizes further treatment. The center will contact him within two working days to get detailed information about the patient and the previous course of treatment.
