Film “Behind matches” opens the list of the best works of the Soviet director. The feature film is based on the story of the same name by Mayu Lassila. The farm is home to a Finnish couple, Antti Ihalainen and Anna-Lisa. One day, the wife discovers that the house has run out of matches. She sends her husband for them to a neighbor. But along the way, Antti meets his old friend, with whom he decides to have a drink for a meeting, from which the adventure journey of the protagonist begins.
9. Sportloto-82
“Sportloto-82” included in the list of the best films of Leonid Gaidai. In the compartment of the train there is a motley four: the girl Tanya, the climber Misha, the simple guy Kostya and the speculator San Sanych. Each of them is addicted to reading the bestseller of the year, “Lethal Murder”. The work is so exciting that Kostya does not notice how he eats all of Tatyana’s chicken. As an apology, the young man buys a lottery ticket for the girl at the nearest station and asks her to fill it out. The girl enters a simple combination of numbers and gives the ticket to Kostya for safekeeping. He absent-mindedly puts it in the wrong book. At the final station, the fellow travelers part, but soon fate will bring them together again, because the filled ticket turns out to be winning.
8. Dog watchdog and extraordinary cross
“Dog Mongrel and the extraordinary cross” is a comedy feature film by Gaidai, nominated for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival as the best short film. Coward, Dunce and Experienced go fishing, taking Barbos the dog with them. To speed up the catch, the buddies throw a stick of dynamite. The dog decides to retrieve the item from the river and swims after it. Realizing what it threatens, friends begin to run away from the “smart” dog. But he, in turn, does not give up and tries with all his might to catch up with the owners in order to hand over the saber, which is about to explode.
7. Self-taught
“Moonshiners” – comedy short film by Leonid Gaidai. In a small forest hut, Balbes, Coward and Experienced are going to set up the production of moonshine. The business is going well and it is possible to produce a lot of alcohol. The producers decide to try the drink themselves, and at the same time feed their dog Barbos with sugar dipped in moonshine. Offended, the dog knocks over the bottles of alcoholic beverages, grabs the serpentine from the moonshine and rushes to run with it into the forest. The tipsy trinity rushes in pursuit of the dog. The moonshiners’ adventures end at the police station, where they are arrested.

“Can’t be!” — Gaidai’s film, which includes three short stories that are interconnected with each other. The artistic picture is a film adaptation of Zoshchenko’s play. In the center of the first short story, the store manager Gorbushkin and his wife Anna Vasilievna. Once the main character is called to the prosecutor’s office to the investigator. Gorbushkin is convinced that the police became aware of his financial fraud, and his wife is of the same opinion. He goes to the prosecutor’s office, and in the meantime, the wife and brother-in-law begin to sell all the property in order to avoid confiscation. In addition, Anna Vasilievna decides to divorce her husband and hastily marries a neighbor. Soon, unsuspecting Gorbushkin, he returns home in a good mood …
5. 12 chairs
“12 chairs” – a feature film by Gaidai, based on the novel of the same name by Ilya Ilf and Evgeny Petrov. Ippolit Matveevich Vorobyaninov learns from his dying mother-in-law that she once hid her jewelry worth 150 thousand gold pieces under the upholstery of one of the chairs in the living room, made by the famous master Gambs. Ippolit Matveyevich rushes in search of the treasured chairs, and a young adventurer Ostap Bender comes to his aid. At the same time, father Fedor opens the hunt for chairs, to whom Vorobyaninov’s mother-in-law also told the secret.
4. Prisoner of the Caucasus or Shurik’s New Adventures
“Prisoner of the Caucasus or Shurik’s New Adventures” – Soviet film of 1966 by an outstanding Soviet director. In the center of events is one of Gaidai’s favorite characters Shurik, played by Alexander Demyanenko. The protagonist of the film goes to the Caucasus to collect folklore. There he meets a charming girl with whom he falls in love. Soon, the beloved is kidnapped in order to force her to marry. Having learned about this, Shurik rushes to help the girl.
3. The Diamond Arm
“The Diamond Arm“- one of the best art paintings by Leonid Gaidai. In one of the southern towns, a smuggling group, led by the Chief and his assistant Count, is doing “dirty deeds”. The story begins with the fact that Soviet citizen Semyon Gorbunkov goes on a cruise on a ship, on which Graf is also sailing. The smuggler must pick up the diamonds in one of the cities and transport them in a plastered hand. But instead of the Count at the appointed hour, Semyon turns up at the appointed place, who slips and falls. The bandits take him for the Count and put plaster on the unsuspecting man, under which there are diamonds. From that moment on, Gorbunkov’s usual measured life ends and dangerous adventures begin.
2. Operation “Y” and Shurik’s other adventures
Gaidai’s film “Operation” Y “and other adventures of Shurik” included in the list of the best Soviet art paintings. The film includes three short stories: “Partner”, “Obsession” and “Operation Y”. In each of the parts of the main character of the film, Shurik is waiting for comical, and sometimes dangerous adventures. In the first story, the hero has to fight the hooligan Verzila, in the other, a very unusual way of preparing for exams and meeting a girl, and in the third, the hero prevents the “theft of the century” that three robbers must commit – Coward, Dunce and Experienced.
1. Ivan Vasilievich
“Ivan Vasilyevich is changing his profession” The best film by Leonid Gaidai. In the top 250 of the Kinopoisk website, the feature film took a worthy 11th place. Scientist Timofeev invents a design that allows time travel. The machine miraculously connects the inventor’s apartment with the chambers of Ivan the Terrible, who ruled in the 16th century. The thief Georges Miloslavsky, who entered the apartment of the scientist and namesake of the Tsar, Ivan Vasilyevich Bunsha, gets into the past. Currently, instead of them, the king falls. Each of the characters is happy to return back to their period, but the breakdown of the time machine disrupts the natural course of events and entails incredible adventures.
