Liposuction does not permanently eliminate adipose tissue

Liposuction allows you to remove fat, but only for a short time. After a year at the latest, fat is deposited again, with the only difference that it is elsewhere in the body, according to research by specialists from the University of Colorado.

Liposuction has been used since 1974. Only in the USA, 450 jobs are performed each year. such treatments. Until now, however, there have been no studies allowing to clearly state how effective this method of getting rid of unnecessary kilograms is. The tests performed by Dr. Teri L. Hernandez and Dr. Robert H. Eckel, surgeons from the University of Colorado, leave no illusions: liposuction only helps for a while.

American doctors conducted studies on women who removed the fat accumulated on the thighs. After a year, their adipose tissue was building up again, but in other parts of the body: mainly on the abdomen, on the back or on the arms. They write about it in the latest edition of Obesity.

Dr. Felmont Eaves III, president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, told the New York Times that the study’s results were surprising but could not be faulted. He also announced that he would inform his patients interested in liposuction about it.

Jonathan Moreno from the University of Pennsylvania explains that no one has made such observations before, because each surgeon has a different method of performing this procedure. However, studies by Hernandez and Eckel have shown that liposuction only produces short-term effects regardless of the technique used. In their opinion, this was to be expected, as the body meticulously defends the fatty tissue it has already produced, even if a small amount of it is removed. Most of the women were sucked off about half a kilo of fat during the tests.

The experiments on rodents were similar. When their body fat was surgically removed, it reappeared after a while, also elsewhere. Dr. Rudolph Leibel, an obesity treatment specialist at the University of Columbia, explains that adipose tissue is re-formed in other parts of the body because suctioning destroys the tissue structures on the thighs that allow it to accumulate there (PAP).
