Lime – properties, action, indications and contraindications. What is linden tea good for?

Lime is a plant whose healing properties are well known. Linden tea has been used for years for a sore throat or runny nose. It is also great for colds and flu, but has many more properties. The linden flower infusion can also be used externally for skin care. What else makes linden a unique plant?

Lipa – a handful of basic information

Lipa is a tree closely related to the Slavic culture that can measure over 30 meters. Many specimens live up to 300 years. The Czechs and Slovenes consider lime as their national tree. What’s more, her image appears on many coats of arms and flags. Poles also appreciate the lime tree, of which we can find many mentions in the culture. Interestingly, the name of the month of July comes from the name of this tree.

The oldest Polish lime growing in Cielętniki was at least 600 years old. Unfortunately, in 2017 the tree was destroyed by the hurricane of Xavier. Interestingly, it was a place of pilgrimage for some time. According to a local superstition, its bark had a healing effect. Anyone who bit a piece of it could count on a miraculous healing. At one point, the linden tree was so crowded and gnawed by tourists that the relevant authorities had to fence it with a net.

The appearance of the linden depends on the age. Young specimens have a smooth bark, slightly greenish in color. Older trees, on the other hand, have cracked trunks and brown or dark gray bark. For many people, the first association with linden is honey. The flowers of the tree give off an intense honey scent, and the tree itself is often besieged by bees.

In Poland, we can find two species of wild-growing linden, i.e. small-leaved and broad-leaved linden. We can often see small-leaved linden at homes. It is planted in parks and gardens, as it is both a decorative and functional plant. In turn, broad-leaved linden grows mainly in the south of the country. Both species are used for the production of medicinal infusions and syrups, and their flowers can also be added to baths.

If we notice that they are just opening, and there are donuts in the crowns, it means that they are already suitable for making an infusion of them.

Herbalists suggest that the flowers from which we prepare the linden infusion should be collected from trees far from the roads. Then the risk of collecting the raw material contaminated with exhaust gases will be small. However, proper processing should not be forgotten. The flowers should be washed with water and placed in a dark, airy place until they are dry. If we do not have the possibility to collect flowers ourselves, let’s go to a herbal store, for example, where we can find a wide selection of linden droughts.
