Some surgical, urological or ENT procedures may irritate the mucosa, and thus cause pain in the patient. The preparation for its elimination is Lignocainum containing lidocaine hydrochloride, an active substance with an anesthetic effect.

Lignocainum – what is it?

Lignocainum Hydrochloricum is a medical device with a local anesthetic effect. It is used in surgical, otolaryngological and urological cases. It contains the active ingredient lidocaine hydrochloride, which is known to numb the mucous membranes.

Lingocainum is used during various types of treatments and tests:

1. in anesthesiology it is used to lubricate just before using the laryngeal mask, gastric probe, endotracheal tube, probe,
2. in laryngology, for surface anesthesia of the nasal mucosa, pharynx and nasopharynx before performing laryngeal endoscopy, covering the tracheotomy tubes, before surgery of polyps in the nose and removal of the hypertrophic tonsil,
3. in urology, Lingnocainum is used to anesthetize the urethra in preparation for procedures such as catheterization, bladder stones crushing, cystoscopy, urethral dilation, bladder electrocoagulation, as well as to lubricate the walls of catheters, specula and tubes.

Lignocainum – dosage and application

Lignocainum is a drug intended for external use. The dose and frequency of use is determined by the attending physician. Following his recommendations will allow Lignocainum to work effectively in therapy. You cannot share the drug with other patients because it has been assigned to a specific person due to individual conditions. In addition, read the package leaflet for the medicine before use.

It is worth noting that the active substance contained in Lignocainum, lidocaine, is quickly absorbed from the mucous membranes into the body. Therefore, it is imperative that the dose is calculated according to the patient’s weight in children or in adults with low body weight.

Before using Lignocainum, verify the expiry date and under no circumstances use the gel beyond its expiry date. According to the guidelines of the manufacturer of Lignocainum, storage after opening should be out of the reach of children, and the packaging should be tightly closed.

Lignocainum – contraindications

You should refrain from taking Lignocainum in the case of:

1. allergy to the active substance of the drug or other local anesthetic agents, hypersensitivity to any of the excipients of the gel,
2. liver function disorders,
3. taking other medications, including antidepressants, muscle relaxants,
4. taking other medications, even those without a prescription,
5. Lignocainum is not recommended during pregnancy, if pregnant or breastfeeding.

Lignocainum – side effects

The use of the gel may sometimes lead to local allergic reactions. Lignocainum overdose may be caused by:

1. headache and dizziness
2. feeling anxious, agitated,
3. taste disturbance,
4. numbness of the tongue
5. ringing in the ears and visual sensations
6. muscle tremors and increased muscle tone,
7. seizures and loss of consciousness
8. large drop in pressure and immersion of the heart rate,
9. respiratory arrest
10. severe depression of the central nervous system.

The drug is available in two variants: Lignocainum hydrochloricum, 2%, gel, type A and Lignocainum hydrochloricum, 2%, gel, type U. The price per 30 g package is about PLN 30.
