Every family member’s day begins and ends with a visit to the bathroom. In it, you tidy yourself up in the morning and get ready for bed in the evening, so it is important that the lighting in it allows you to appreciate how good you look. Since, as a rule, there is no natural light in bathrooms, it is necessary to correctly select and place artificial light sources.
Options for the optimal placement of lamps in the functional areas of the bathroom
In standard-layout apartments, bathrooms are not very large, therefore, in small rooms, the traditional lighting option is most often used with two sources of artificial light, one of which is located under the ceiling, the other above the mirror. As a rule, two lamps of low power of 75 watts each turn out to be quite enough in this case.
For those bathrooms with an area of more than 5 square meters, the selection and placement of fixtures is already a task that has many solutions. First of all, you need to define functional areas and place light sources in each of them. These zones can be distinguished not only with color and light, but also with the help of podiums and steps. You can choose your own design for each such zone or use a common solution that unites them into a single space.
In the area where there is a mirror with a washbasin, it is better to use two light sources located on the sides so that their reflection cannot be seen. This option will allow you to achieve the desired level of illumination, but at the same time the lamps will not shine directly into the eyes.
Lamps by the mirror should have matte white shades, such a light will not create harsh shadows and distort the complexion
If there is enough space and the bathtub is located on the podium, an interesting solution would be a floor lamp placed next to it, or a beautiful colored glass lampshade that can be hung directly above it. Another non-standard option is the lighting installed in the podium or in the floor next to the bathroom.
Sometimes the bathroom has a washing machine or cabinets with toiletries and towels, these areas can also be highlighted with lighting that turns on as needed. Luminaires can be installed in pull-out shelves or drawers, which is very convenient.
If you like bright light, for safety reasons, it is better to install several low-power lamps in the bathroom, which can replace one powerful one.
Electrical safety issues
The fixtures and outlets that are powered by electricity that you want to place in the bathroom must be safe in high humidity conditions. The degree of their safety is characterized by the IP parameter, which consists of two digits, and the second just shows the degree of protection against moisture. You should choose appliances that have at least 4 such protection, which guarantees safe operation, even when individual drops fall on them from different angles.
