Ligation of the vas deferens is a procedure that is increasingly performed in our country. Its common name is vasectomy. It is a legal contraceptive procedure performed for men. Its intention is to prevent fertilization. The effectiveness of the vas ligation is estimated to be quite high, about 99%. In this respect, the vas ligation is assessed as being effective on the same level as the tubal ligation in women. This procedure does not deprive men of the possibility of having sexual intercourse, but ensures that there will be no sperm in their sperm.
Ligation of the vas deferens – what is it and what does the procedure involve?
Ligation of the vas deferens is a form of microsurgery. During it, the vas deferens transporting sperm from the testicles are cut. As a result, the road traveled by them is disrupted. This procedure is safe and does not involve the risk of damaging the reproductive organs. Often, ligation of the vas deferens consists of making two short punctures, precisely aimed at the vas deferens, without any deeper interference with the penile tissue. After puncture, specialist titanium clips are placed on the vas, and then the vas itself is cut. After cutting a few millimeters of its length, the vas opening is closed. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, therefore its course is completely painless. The duration of the full vas ligation procedure is approximately 60 minutes.
Ligation of the vas deferens – then what?
Ligation of the vas deferens is a procedure dedicated to mature men. Most often it is performed by adult men, over 40, staying in permanent, long-term relationships, having offspring. The main reason for performing this procedure is the desire to protect against the possibility of fathering further offspring. The procedure is also performed by men whose wives – if they became pregnant – would be in a life-threatening situation. Regardless of the intention to perform the procedure and the current age of the person concerned, the decision to participate in the vas ligation procedure should be carefully considered.
As with all procedures, the vas ligation also carries some risks. It should be noted, however, that it is extremely low, and any postoperative complications are extremely rare. The most common are the immediate consequences of the procedure – a bruise or swelling in the scrotum area, noticeable presence of blood in the sperm or inflammation of the penile tissues after the procedure. In addition, there may also be indirect complications that develop longer after the procedure. The possibility of reconstruction of part of the vas deferens should be mentioned in particular. In such situations, sperm begins to appear in the sperm of men who have undergone a vas ligation.
After performing the vas ligation procedure, sexual intercourse should be avoided. The time of sexual abstinence is determined by the doctor, and this period depends, inter alia, on the pace of treatment of postoperative wounds. Usually, this period did not exceed 2 weeks. During it, sports and excessive physical exertion are also discouraged. After the procedure, you can quickly return to regular work in a sitting position, usually 4 days after the procedure, you can return to work in the office.
In addition, sperm may still be present in the vas immediately after ligation. Therefore, to avoid an unplanned pregnancy, you should use other contraceptives, such as condoms, for about 30 days after the procedure. Usually it is estimated that during this period there is a complete cleansing of the tissue environment of sperm.
Ligation of the vas deferens and sexual drive
Men contemplating undergoing a vas ligation often wonder to what extent it is safe for their sex drive. It should be explained that ligation of the vas deferens does not significantly affect the course of sexual life, does not cause problems with erection, ejaculation or low libido. The procedure is performed at a safe distance from essential nerves and blood vessels, which prevents significant tissue damage. The loss of the presence of sperm in semen also does not affect the comfort of sexual life itself. Their absence also does not change the appearance, smell or consistency of male sperm. The hormonal balance of the male body does not change after the vas ligation procedure. In other words, despite deliberately inducing infertility, the male organism retains its existing properties related to sex and sexual life.
Performing a vas ligation is a relatively cheap contraceptive procedure. Its price starts from about PLN 2000. It is a one-time expense, and therefore the vas ligation is one of the cheaper methods of contraception.
