However, it is said that the whole mechanism is related to the influence on the concentration of calcium ions in nerve cells and the inhibition of N-type currents. Levetiracetam – contraindications
However, like any drug, Levetiracetam also has its own contraindications. The drug should be used very carefully in patients who suffer from renal dysfunction. It may then be necessary to modify the treatment. If, on the other hand, we are dealing with a patient with impaired liver function, it is recommended to assess kidney function before starting treatment. In addition, during treatment with the drug, it will be necessary to monitor the patient’s behavior, especially for depression, as well as suicidal thoughts and behavior.
The studies do not show that the drug has any effect on puberty in children. However, there are no data on long-term use and the effects on learning, growth, endocrine function, and fertility. Additionally, it is not recommended to use the drug in pregnant women and those of childbearing age who do not use contraception, unless treatment is necessary.
Levetiracetam – pregnancy and side effects
If you are pregnant, stopping antiepileptic treatment may lead to an exacerbation of your disease. This, in turn, can be harmful not only to the mother, but also to the baby. In addition, this medicine passes into breast milk, therefore treatment with Levetiracetam is not recommended in nursing mothers. Besides, this drug, like any other drug, causes many side effects. The most common ones are somnolence and nasopharyngitis. Headaches and photophobia are also common. In addition, there are nervousness, irritability and convulsions.

There are many medicines containing Levetiracetam. The price depends on the manufacturer and the amount of active substance contained in one tablet. Usually, we will buy the drug from PLN 20. We will pay even several dozen zlotys for larger doses. It is always worth looking for substitutes that contain exactly the same active substance and which we can buy much cheaper.
