When we say harmless “just”, the interlocutor feels that we downplay the difficulties that he will have to face, devalue his efforts. The word «simple» brushes aside the seriousness of the problem. To help a friend, it is better to act gently and without pressure: invite him, say, to drink coffee … and listen without giving advice.
