Less sitting means healthier kidneys

Spending hours at a desk can increase the risk of kidney failure, according to an analysis published by the American Journal of Kidney Diseases.

For women who sit less than three hours a day, the risk of developing kidney failure is 30%. lower than for ladies who sit for more than eight hours every day. This relationship is less pronounced in men – the risk is 15%. lower, if they do not spend many hours sitting.

It was also established that in men who sat for a long time, but cared for a regular dose of exercise, for example, 30 minutes of walking a day, the risk was 30%. lower than those who spent the same amount of time seated but did not exercise at all. Interestingly, physical activity did not influence the risk of renal failure in women.

5,6 thousand people participated in the research. people aged 40 to 75.

The causes of kidney failure may be different. The most important of these include the reduction of blood flow through the kidneys, damage to the renal parenchyma, the action of toxic factors, as well as diabetes and arterial hypertension.

As of today, we do not know exactly how sedentary lifestyle or exercise affects kidney health. It is clear, however, that exercise lowers blood pressure and cholesterol levels, improves glucose metabolism and thus promotes cardiovascular health, says research leader Dr. Thomas Yates at the University of Leicester.

Our observations suggest that moderate or vigorous physical activity, such as brisk walking and running, is important for the proper functioning of the kidneys. This factor may have a better effect on men, while reducing the time spent in a sitting position may be more important for women, he adds.
