Leningradskaya currant: variety description and photo
Black currant “Leningradskaya” is one of the best late-ripening varieties. It was bred as a result of crossing the “Leningrad Giant” and “Ojebin”. In order to grow it on the site, you need to know all the features of planting and care, which will be discussed further.
Description of the currant “Leningradskaya”
This is a domestic variety of large-fruited currants. It is suitable for growing in the northern regions and in Central Russia.
In addition to high winter hardiness, the variety has the following advantages:
- drought tolerance;
- high yield, up to 4 kg per bush;
- precocity;
- resistance to powdery mildew, anthracnose, rust and kidney mites;
- self-fertility, pollinating bushes are not required;
- large berries;
- excellent taste characteristics of the fruit;
- fast growth rate of the bush.
The disadvantage is the non-simultaneous ripening of the berries. The skin may crack when the fruit is overripe.
Berries up to 3,7 g. They are round or flattened, collected in a brush of 5-8 pieces. They have a pleasant aroma. The skin is thin but firm. There are many seeds in the pulp, the taste is sweet and sour, the sugar content is 9,9%. Assessment of taste characteristics – 5 out of 5 points. We present a photo to the description of the Leningradskaya currant variety.
The bushes are compact, slightly spreading. Shoots are thickened, erect. The leaves are five-lobed, large, of a dark green shade with pubescence. The flowers are goblet-shaped, green-white with a slight pink tint.
Growing currant “Leningradskaya”
For planting currants, choose a sunny place, areas along the fence are especially favorable. The variety does not tolerate stagnant water, so be sure to drain it. It is better to plant seedlings in sandy loam or loamy soil, pH = 6-6,5.
Annual pruning is essential to rejuvenate the bush. It helps to increase yields
In order for the lateral shoots to grow, and the currants to bush, in the fall you need to cut off the old shoots by ¼ of the length.
Despite the fact that the variety is resistant to diseases, under unfavorable climatic conditions, it is possible to damage the bushes with powdery mildew, anthracnose, septoria, aphids and ticks. There is no need to wait until the currants get sick or die, regularly carry out preventive treatment. In the spring, spray the bushes with colloidal sulfur and nitrafen solution.
The Leningradskaya variety is universal. Currant berries can be eaten fresh or made from them for the winter. To harvest a high-quality crop, harvest the fruits in a timely manner, otherwise large berries will crack.
