Alpine Lake Sevan occupies almost a tenth of the territory of all of Armenia, it is entwined with legends and is the protagonist of many folk tales and myths. Therefore, the release of a drink with that name is quite natural. Fans of Armenian cognacs call “Legends of Sevan” an excellent conversational partner and a worthy leader in the industry.
There are a lot of legends about the lake – short and wordy, about love and faith, about the courage of men and women’s tenderness. It is difficult to say which of them the creators of this drink had in mind. There are three popular versions. The first legend is about a fragment of a wooden cross on which Christ was crucified. A piece of wood with traces of Christ’s blood was kept in the Ayrivank monastery located on the shore of a mountain lake.
The second is about a brave young man who went swimming to the house of his beloved girl when he found out that she was being married against her will. He was dragged to the bottom of the mermaid, and on bad nights, between flashes of lightning and thunder, you can hear his moan and see his tear-stained face in the middle of the water surface.
And the third legend tells about a girl who came to the spring with a jug and, dreaming, forgot to close the stream with a boulder. The water flooded the valley, people were escaping on the trees, and someone rashly exclaimed: “May the one who caused trouble turn into stone!” The girl turned to stone, powerful waters formed a lake, and the girl’s head remained above the water in the form of a peninsula.
Each of these legends has several interpretations, often performed with musical accompaniment. Cognac Legends of Sevan has become as much a part of Armenian culture as the legends themselves.
About the company
The beginning of history was the reorganization of the Shustov factory in 1948 – two enterprises were made from one enterprise – the Yerevan Winery and the Yerevan Brandy Factory. EKVVK “Ararat” appeared on the site of the Yerevan wine factory in 2001 and very quickly became a strong competitor to the Yerevan (and then Ararat) brandy factory.
The management of the plant decided to revive the rich traditions of cognac production with the help of family archives and old manuscripts. And in 2001, when the company changed its owner – it became the Armenian alcohol concern “MultiGroup”, the plant changed its name and got more than fifty million dollars for development – the construction of new workshops, the purchase of a bottling line and oak packaging.
The leading brand of EKVVK “Ararat” is the line of cognacs “Noy”, created according to preserved ancient fragments and recipes. Thanks to this collection, the enterprise became the exclusive supplier of the Kremlin.
