Leeks: planting and care

Leeks: planting and care

Leeks taste the same as regular green onions, but they are more beneficial. The dietary product normalizes joints, increases hemoglobin, colonizes the intestines with beneficial bacteria, lowers cholesterol and increases libido. You can grow leeks yourself, caring for the culture is quite simple.

Planting leek seeds and caring for seedlings

In the southern regions, pearl onion seeds are sown directly into the ground, but residents of the central and northern parts of the country have to grow seedlings. This will speed up the ripening of the onions.

Leeks need full care and feeding

Seeds are sown for seedlings in the first half of March, otherwise the seedlings will stretch out from lack of lighting. The soil is prepared in advance, using a loose soil mixture. It can be prepared independently from turf, peat and humus. Sowing is done in a row method, at least 5 cm is left between the lines.

The containers are covered with foil until the first shoots appear. Keep in a warm place. After the seeds have hatched, the temperature is lowered to 18 ° C so that the seedlings do not stretch out. After 14 days, the temperature is raised to 20-22 ° C.

Seedling care is minimal. Seedlings need regular watering and feeding. Onions love moisture, but you do not need to be zealous with watering, this can lead to the appearance of a black leg. The seedlings will quickly die. They feed the plants several times, use ready-made mineral complexes.

Planting leeks in the garden and caring for the crop in the open field

Seedlings are grown for 60 days, after which the plants are planted in open ground. By this time, they have a well-developed root system, there are 4 leaves. In the northern regions, plantings are covered with foil so that they do not fall under night frosts.

Pearl onions are grown in open areas, as they need an abundance of light and warmth. The garden bed is prepared in advance, dug up and fertilized:

  • humus;
  • ash;
  • mineral complexes.

The prepared soil is leveled and well moistened. Onions are planted in two lines, between which they leave 20-25 cm.The roots are buried by 15 cm, and 10 cm is left between the plants in a row.

To get a succulent white stem, the plant needs to be cared for properly. The soil is always kept moist, especially during the formation of the false bulb, this is somewhere in the middle of July. After each watering, the soil is loosened, weeds are removed. The onion is piled up several times, after which the soil is mulched to green leaves. They are fed 2-3 times with mullein solution, fermented grass or poultry droppings.

Often it is impossible to fertilize with nitrogen mixtures, this will lead to stem rot

As you can see, the whole process of growing onions is simple. If you adhere to certain rules and tips, then the harvest will be rich.
