A dermal cyst is a benign neoplasm that most often arises from the epidermis and its appendages. It is a pathological space in the body that can be filled by hair, nails and glands. Most of the time, the cancer may not show symptoms, which only show when it is complicated.

Leather cyst – what is it?

The ectodermal leaf is a type of tissue from which structures such as the epidermis and its appendages (products): nails, hair, glands are formed during embryonic development. All the derivatives of the ectoderm can be found inside the dermal cyst: shaped hair and structures that emit sweat and sebum. Hence the name: dermal cyst. For it is nothing other than a cavity with elements of the skin. Sometimes deformed teeth can also be found in the wall of the cyst.

Leather cyst – causes

During the embryonic period, the differentiating ectoderm cells travel to different parts of the body. If they “get lost” during this hike, they can form a skin cyst. Its most common location is the gonads (ovary, less often – the testicle) and – much less often – organs located in the midline of the body, i.e. the pituitary gland, structures inside the thorax, and the sacro-lumbar region.

A dermal cyst is a benign tumor and does not malignant in most cases. It can reveal itself already in childhood. It also applies to young people between 20 and 30 years of age. Sometimes it occurs on both sides.

Leather cyst – diagnosis

The cyst itself may be asymptomatic for a long time. It happens that it is diagnosed only when there are complications related to it. It can be: a twist of the cyst peduncle, its suppuration, rupture or perforation into the peritoneal cavity, bladder, intestine or out through the abdominal wall. Treatment of a dermal cyst involves surgical removal of the lesion.
