The leader is the first, the main one, who they follow, who they look up to, who determines the behavior of others. The leader in a pair is the one who leads the other, whose behavior determines the behavior of the follower. The leader in the team is the one who leads the team, the one whose influence on the group is greater than that of others.

Leadership is being in the status of a leader and leading people behind you.

A leader whose influence is due to the strength of the position is a formal leader. A person exercising leadership regardless of position is an informal leader.

A person whose influence is due to his personal qualities, the strength of his personality, is a charismatic leader.

Unlike the leader, the power of the leader is incomprehensible. If it is clear that they are following one person, and why it is not clear, as if some kind of inner strength emanates from this person, he is called a leader. If a person is followed due to the use of certain means of influence by him — a stick or a carrot, such a person, as a rule, is no longer called a leader. That is why the notion of a charismatic leader is ubiquitous, while the formal leader is a less common concept. “Because what kind of leader is he, if appointed, if he is listened to because of the power of another?”

Who and why becomes a leader?

The leader usually emerges in response to the expectations of others: “We need a leader.” A leader is a group role created primarily by the expectations of others. The leader is not something external and alien to the group: the group needs a leader, it is looking for someone to appoint to this role, to whom to give this status.

There are some personal qualities that help a person become a leader: first of all, it is courage, energy and the ability to impress.

The group seeks and recognizes as a Leader only one who initially has some status. Not every high-status person will become a Leader, but a low-status one will never become one and will not be recognized as a Leader. Among status people, the leader most often becomes the one who responds to the specific expectations of the group, gives the group what it wants — or those who can create an appearance, can speak beautifully and promise people what they want to believe.

By type of activity differ:

  1. Those who want to be leaders, but are not leaders (fears, laziness, fatigue, the habit of lack of activity interfere with them),
  2. Clueless activists (Brave, energetic. They make noise and act without a goal)
  3. Primate leaders (Brave, energetic, smart. Every man for himself. Struggle for power and rightness, leading to destruction and losses).
  4. Civilized leaders (Brave, energetic, smart. All for a common cause. Distribution of functions and directions, cooperation).
