Lavistina – what is it?

Lavistina is a remedy for diseases of the inner ear and others that manifest as dizziness, tinnitus, and increasing hearing impairment. It is a synthetic analogue of histamine, an antagonist of the H3 receptor (an intermediary in the production of histamine) and H1 receptor (excess leads to smooth muscle contractions, vasodilation and pressure drop).

Lavistina – action and indications

Lavistina is a substance that exhibits betahistine agonist activity at H1 receptors. It is used, for example, in Menier’s disease. The effectiveness of the drug is not fully understood, but most likely is due to its ability to alter blood flow in the inner ear. There are properties that may also result from a direct effect on the neurons of the vestibular nucleus. In addition, the drug has an effect such as:

  1. increasing the permeability of the pulmonary epithelium,
  2. decrease in blood pressure (occurs in patients with the previous property)
  3. influence on the function of the exocrine glands.

The drug is recommended for Meniere’s diseasewhich manifests itself:

  1. dizziness
  2. tinnitus
  3. hearing loss
  4. nausea.

Lavistina – contraindications

Particular care should be taken when the patient:

  1. suffers from bronchial asthma,
  2. has peptic ulcer disease,
  3. has hives, rash or allergic rhinitis
  4. has high blood pressure.

The use of the drug may aggravate the symptoms of other diseases, therefore patients with the above-mentioned ailments should be under constant medical care.

Due to insufficient research and safety of the drug has not been confirmed not recommended for people under 18 years of age. Lavistina is composed of lactose, so people with lactose intolerance should also be under close medical supervision.

Another contraindication is hypersensitivity to the active substance – betahistine – or to any of the ingredients.

The following undesirable effects of taking the drug may occur:

  1. gastrointestinal complications (which should disappear when the dose is reduced)
  2. skin hypersensitivity,
  3. headaches,
  4. somnolence,
  5. nausea,
  6. angioedema.

If somnolence occurs, driving is discouraged as the condition may delay the driver’s response.

Lavistina and pregnancy

If the use of the drug is not strictly necessary, it is not recommended to use it during pregnancy. The decision to take Lavistina is made by the doctor on the basis of an analysis of the likely positive and negative effects. The drug may be potentially dangerous to a child.
