Laurent-Perrier (Laurent-Perrier) is a French house of champagne wines that celebrated its bicentennial anniversary. The family firm is one of the best producers of extra-class wines. The hallmark of Laurent-Perrier is pink champagne, which is created using unusual technologies and is distinguished by a rich berry bouquet. The brand’s products are exported to 160 countries around the world.
Historical information
Laurent-Perrier was founded in 1812 by Alphonse Pierlot. The former cooper bought plots of land in the vicinity of a small village near Epernay and took up the cultivation and processing of grapes. The owner bequeathed a small enterprise to his chief winemaker Eugene Laurent. After the death of the master, the company passed to his widow Matilda, who did a lot to develop the business. By 1914, the production of champagne had increased to fifty thousand bottles a year.
The events of the First World War did not have the best effect on the business life of France. Demand for sparkling wines has fallen, and even efforts to promote the brand in the UK have not been able to improve the situation. In 1938, Mathilde’s daughter Laurent sold the plant to Marie-Louise de Nonancourt. The new owner did everything to save the company during the German occupation. She even had to pawn stocks of champagne, which was stored in the cellars, in order to prevent production from stopping.
After the end of the war, the son of the owner, Bernard de Nonancourt, joined the management of the company. In 1949, he headed the company and began to introduce new technological approaches to the production of champagne. In the early 50s, the company was one of the first to use stainless steel tanks for fermentation. Exposure at low temperatures made it possible to maintain the freshness of the taste of natural grapes, which soon distinguished Laurent-Perrier champagne from the background of products from other manufacturers.
Bernard de Nonancourt ran the company until his death in 2010. The business was taken over by his two daughters, Alexandra and Stephanie. Together with chief master Michel Focconet, they continue the work of their father, creating wines with a refined and fresh taste, characteristic of the Laurent-Perrier style.
Production features
The company owns vineyards with exceptional terroir in the Champagne region. The chalky soil with the remains of fossilized algae is fed by many underground sources, which allows the grapes to achieve the perfect balance of sweetness and acidity. Each batch of hand-picked raw materials is vinified separately. The dominant varieties are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The wine house is famous for its pink champagne, which is made by maceration and aged on the lees for at least five years.
