Late cabbage: varieties, planting and care
Late cabbage is appreciated by gardeners for its high yield and ability to long-term storage. Late ripening crops produce larger and stronger roots than early varieties. In addition, this type of cabbage is ideal for sourdough.
The best varieties of late cabbage
Before you start planting a plant, you need to select the desired variety of cabbage. It will depend on him how long the fruits can be stored and what they can be used for.
The following varieties have proven themselves well:
- “Aggressor” – this hybrid type of late-ripening cabbage is suitable even for a beginner gardener. It is unpretentious to growing conditions and does not require careful personal care. Heads of cabbage grow dense and do not crack. Their average weight is 3-5 kg. The variety can be stored for up to 6 months and is suitable for fermentation.
- “Moscow late” – one of the highest-yielding types of culture. Large root crops – maximum weight up to 15 kg. Cabbage is great for sourdough.
- “Kolobok” is another hybrid species that gives a bountiful harvest. Heads of cabbage grow round, weighing up to 5 kg, do not crack. The color above is saturated green, in the context – white. The culture is resistant to diseases and pests. When stored properly, root crops can lie until May.
When choosing cabbage seeds, you should also take into account the climatic conditions of the region in which it will be grown. When buying, you should carefully study the descriptions of the type indicated on the packaging and the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Planting and caring for late cabbage
Late-ripening cabbage is planted through seedlings. Seeds are sown in mid-April in a special box or greenhouse to a depth of 1 cm. You can buy a ready-made substrate or prepare it yourself. A mixture of turf, sand and peat is suitable. After sowing, the soil is watered abundantly.
It is better to grow seedlings on the street or on a balcony, or in a greenhouse. The container must be covered with a film, it must be periodically opened on sunny days.
Seedlings are transplanted to a bed fertilized with humus after the appearance of 4-5 leaves, the strongest plants among the seedlings are selected. The distance between the holes must be at least 40 cm.
Caring for cabbage consists in abundant watering, loosening the earth, pulling out weeds. During the period of active ripening of fruits, watering should be reduced. Ash is used as protection against pests.
The crop must be harvested before the onset of frost. For this, it is best to choose a dry and sunny day. When grown properly, you can harvest a large cabbage crop.
