Myopia, farsightedness and astigmatism are the most common sight defects among Poles. Blurred vision near or far can make everyday life difficult. Especially when we lead an active lifestyle and play sports, wearing glasses or lenses can be problematic. Laser vision correction using the LASIK method comes to the rescue.

How does a healthy eye work?

In people who do not have a visual defect and no vision problems, the cornea of the eye is perfectly round, and the light reaching it is reflected at one point on the retina. There the image is reversed and thanks to the optic nerves it goes to the brain, which determines the final shape of the image we see. Vision defect occurs when some part of the eye does not function properly.

When the lens or the cornea of the eye becomes too convex, and the light rays reaching the eyes are refracted not on the retina, but in front of it, we speak of myopia. The easiest way to recognize it is that the patient can see very well the smallest details of objects up close, and objects at a certain distance become blurry. To sharpen their shape, people with myopia begin to narrow their eyes.

In turn, with farsightedness, too short an eyeball causes light rays refract behind the retina. Patients with this visual defect can see well from a distance, but close vision is a problem for them. The letters in the book you are reading blur, and putting a thread on the needle is almost a miracle.

The third most common defect that not all patients are aware of is astigmatism. The shape of a rugby ball in the cornea means that the light rays entering the eye do not refract at one point, but at several points. This causes both near and far vision problems.

Find out how to choose a method of laser vision correction depending on the type of defect.

LASIK laser vision correction

All three vision defects can be corrected thanks to laser vision correction. One of the methods is LASIK. This technique has been used in ophthalmology since the 90s. The laser vision removal procedure itself consists of two stages. During the first one, after anesthesia of the eye with special drops, the corneal flap is cut off, leaving a thin connection with the rest of the nose on the side of the nose.

In the second stage, the cut-off piece is folded back and the shape of the cornea is changed with the help of an excimer laser. Due to the change of its shape, it is possible to completely or partially remove the sight defect. After the end of the laser operation, the cut off piece of the cornea is reapplied to the eyeball, drops with anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects are instilled, and a special lens with a dressing is put on the eyeball. The entire procedure, including the preparation and application of the dressing, takes about 30 minutes. Do you want to submit to him? Qualification for laser vision correction using the LASIK method

It is of utmost importance when qualifying a patient for laser vision correction using the LASIK method the thickness of the cornea. If the cornea is too thin, there is a high risk that cutting the flap and modeling it may seriously damage or weaken it.

LASIK method recommended for patients with myopia up to 13 diopters and farsightedness up to +6 diopters. The procedure cannot be performed on patients under 18 and over 55 years of age. In addition, the patient must have stabilized visual impairment for at least 6 months before the planned surgery. If the defect is not constant and is getting worse, there is no point in performing a laser correction. The procedure is also not performed in people suffering from eye diseases, such as cataracts, retinal detachment or glaucoma. Contraindications are also thyroid diseases, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, pregnancy, breastfeeding and previous eye surgery.

During the qualification for the procedure, in addition to the interview with the patient, the doctor should recommend a series of tests that will assess the tan of the eyes. These will be tests:

  1. visual acuity;
  2. field of view;
  3. intraocular pressure measurement;
  4. dna oka;
  5. corneal topography;
  6. ocular ultrasound.

Only when the doctor decides that the test results are good and there are no other contraindications, it will be possible to perform the correction.

Complications after applying the LASIK method

As after other surgical procedures, complications and side effects are possible in the case of laser vision correction using the LASIK method. Most often they occur when patients do not follow medical recommendations, do not use prescribed medications and forget about proper hygiene.

Although complications occur in only 1% of respondents. patients who have undergone the procedure, you should be aware that they may occur. The least frequent are bleeding, detachment of the retina or an increase in pressure in the eyeball. The so-called halo effect, i.e. the impression of a brighter glow around light sources, dry eyes syndrome, pain, watery eyes or blurred vision. Although the appearance of side effects is normal and temporary, if it lasts a long time and the next follow-up visit is only a few days away, it is worth consulting with the doctor who performed the procedure.
