Bright and lush blooming azalea bushes can become a worthy decoration of any garden. In combination with other flowering plants, they will become a harmonious part of the landscape design of your site.
Planting azaleas in the garden – a description of the process
If you choose the right varieties with different flowering periods, then you can enjoy their beauty for a long time.
The most favorable time for planting a garden azalea is early spring, before vegetative activity begins. But if necessary, you can plant a plant in the ground in September, then it will still have enough time to take root and get stronger.
When purchasing seedlings, you should make sure of their viability. They must be firm and firm. Planting material should not have any damage and traces of plant diseases
This crop prefers loose, acidic soils – this should be taken into account when planning a place for flowers. The process of planting an azalea in open ground is as follows:
- Prepare a planting hole approximately 50 cm deep and 70 cm wide and long.
- Lay a drainage layer at the bottom of the pit; its thickness should be at least 10 cm.
- Pour a layer of nutritious soil over the drainage and make a depression in it for the root system of the seedling.
- Moisten the soil and place the azalea in the hole.
- Cover the root system of the bush with soil and tie it to a peg.
A seedling purchased in a container with a closed root system has a much greater chance of successfully taking root than a seedling with open roots. This can be determined by the appearance of the land in the container – the surface of the earth can be covered with elements of moss and must have a dense structure.
Azalea care after planting outdoors
After planting, you must carefully observe how the plant takes root. Azalea needs regular watering and spraying. In order for the flower to be able to prepare for the winter period, watering must be gradually reduced from August.
Mulching is an indispensable element of garden azalea care. A layer of mulch prevents the soil from drying out and slows down the development of weeds. Needles, sawdust or shavings can be used as mulch.
It is required to feed the flower before the beginning of the growing season, as well as before and after flowering. For this, you can use complex mineral fertilizers.
In the spring, dry and weak shoots should be removed, and in the fall, the plant is subjected to formative pruning, during which excessively long branches are shortened. Garden azalea is a very grateful plant, and it will respond to your care with beautiful delicate flowers that will delight with their appearance and cheer you up.
