Seizures pose a threat to the health and life of a person suffering from epilepsy. Lamotrigine is a medicine that is used on its own or in combination therapy for epilepsy. Here is information about the indications, composition and contraindications for taking the drug.

Lamotrix – indications and action

Lamotrix is ​​used in neurology because it acts on the central nervous system. It is used in the case of:

  1. monotherapy in children over 12 years of age and adults with partial seizures, primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and secondary generalized tonic-clonic seizures,
  2. combination therapy with other drugs in children over 2 years of age and adults suffering from partial seizures, primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures, as well as secondary generalized tonic-clonic seizures,
  3. the treatment of seizures resulting from Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.

Lamotrix – composition

The active ingredient in Lamotrigine is lamotrigine, a substance with anti-epileptic and mood stabilizing properties. There are packages of the drug with the content of 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg of lamotrigine in one tablet.

The other ingredients of Lamotrigine are: calcium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate, croscarmellose sodium, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, talc and povidone.

Lamotrix – dosage

Lamotrigine tablets are taken by mouth. Both the daily doses and the frequency of use are determined by the doctor. Following its recommendations is essential for the effective and safe therapy of Lamotrix. Remember to gradually stop taking your medication as sudden stopping it may result in a relapse of epilepsy. An important source of knowledge about the drug is the leaflet. Lamotrix should only be used within the expiry date marked on the package. It cannot be shared with other patients because it is prescribed by a doctor for a given condition in a specific person.

Lamotrix – contraindications and comments

Lamotrix should not be used in the case of:

  1. hypersensitivity to the active substance of the drug or any other excipient,
  2. liver or kidney problems
  3. taking other anticonvulsants
  4. taking oral contraceptives,
  5. taking other medications, including over-the-counter medications,
  6. pregnancy and breastfeeding,
  7. the need to drive vehicles or operate machinery.

When the above circumstances arise, consult a physician. Lamotrix should be stored in a tightly closed container, out of the reach of children, at a temperature of 15-25 degrees C.

Lamotrix – side effects

When taken alone with Lamotrigine Tablets, the following may occur:

  1. fatigue, headaches and dizziness,
  2. sleepiness or insomnia
  3. nausea,
  4. rash and other acute skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome and Lyell’s syndrome)
  5. hypersensitivity manifested by swollen lymph nodes, fever, swelling of the face and some abnormal blood counts.

Combining Lamotrigine tablets with other medicines may cause:

  1. hallucinations, double or blurred vision
  2. headaches and dizziness,
  3. tiredness or agitation,
  4. irritability and aggressiveness,
  5. conjunctivitis,
  6. disturbances of consciousness,
  7. muscle tremors
  8. vomiting and diarrhea
  9. hematological changes.

Lamotrix is ​​sold by prescription in packs of 30 tablets. The price of the preparation is about PLN 30, but the medical device is reimbursed. Lamotrix can be replaced with Lameptil S, Verpin, Epitrigine or Lamitrin. Alternative drugs must be approved by a doctor.
