Lactulose — MIP

Lactulose – MIP is a preparation used in the treatment of constipation and in the prevention and treatment of hepatic encephalopathy. The active substance of the preparation is lactulose, which is not digested in the small intestine and enters the large intestine unchanged. The preparation may be taken only after consulting a doctor and under his supervision. The drug is in the form of a syrup and is intended for oral administration.

Lactulose – MIP is an osmotic laxative.

Lactulose – MIP – indications and dosage

Lactulose – MIP is a preparation intended for the treatment of:

  1. constipation
  2. hepatic encephalopathy.

Drug dosage

Lactulose – MIP is in the form of a drug and is intended for oral administration. Do not exceed the recommended dose as it may endanger your life or health.

It sucks

  1. Adults. 10-15 ml 1-2 × / day.
  2. Kids. Initially 10-25 ml / day for 2-3 days, then 5-15 ml / day.

Prevention and treatment of hepatic encephalopathy

Adults. initially 10–15 ml 3 × / day, then increase the dose to 30–45 ml 3–4 × / day.

Lactulose – MIP and contraindications

There are the following contraindications to the use of Lactulose – MIP:

  1. allergy to any ingredient of the preparation,
  2. bowel obstruction,
  3. gastrointestinal inflammation,
  4. disturbance of water and electrolyte balance,
  5. use in patients with hereditary fructose intolerance,
  6. use in people with impaired secretion of lactase, galactosemia, impaired intestinal glucose and galactose absorption.

Lactulose – MIP – warnings

  1. Patients with diabetes should be careful when taking the drug, because 15 ml of the preparation contains 2,4 g of carbohydrates in the form of fructose, galactose and lactose.
  2. If the drug is administered to children and infants, hereditary fructose intolerance should be ruled out. Taking the drug in patients with fructose intolerance may cause hypoglycaemia, liver, kidney and brain dysfunction.
  3. Pregnant and breastfeeding women may use the preparation only after consulting a doctor.

Lactulose – MIP with other drugs

  1. Lactulose contained in the preparation reduces the pH of the colon (acidification of the contents of the large intestine), and may inhibit the effectiveness of drugs whose pH depends on the colon.
  2. Lactulose increases the loss of potassium that is associated with the intake of diuretics, corticosteroids or amphotericin B. Lowered potassium levels in the blood may lead to the worsening of cardiac glycosides.

Lactulose – MIP – side effects

While taking Lactulose – MIP you may experience:

  1. flatulence
  2. stomach pain,
  3. diarrhea,
  4. nausea,
  5. vomiting and electrolyte imbalance (in which case the dose should be reduced).

Taking too high doses of the drug in hepatic encephalopathy may lead to a disturbance of the electrolyte composition of the plasma.
