Lack of sleep causes obesity

Scientists from the United States have found that a lack of sleep at night causes obesity. The study showed that as a result of lack of sleep, a person produces a “hunger hormone” – ghrelin. The body tries to compensate for the lack of sleep with this hormone. As a result, people who are nocturnal have a feeling of hunger. It is noteworthy that when a person sleeps, his body produces the hormone leptin, which suppresses appetite.

Experts also found that people who sleep less than 5 hours a day are 2,5 times more likely to develop diabetes than those who sleep the required number of hours. At the same time, they are twice as likely to get a heart attack as compared to those who get enough sleep. Lack of sleep is fraught with an increase in blood pressure and serious consequences in the form of depression, nervous disorders and even alcoholism.

If a person does not get enough sleep at night for a whole week, then on weekends his body will still not be able to “catch up” the missed sleep time. Especially often workaholics torment their bodies with lack of sleep during the working week: these people console themselves with the fact that the weekend will come, and then they will catch up and get enough sleep “for a week in advance.” However, you can “sleep off” after a maximum of one sleepless night. Lack of sleep for several nights already leads to malfunctions in the body, causes increased excitability, hallucinations and depression.
