So it turns out depression melancholijna i niemelancholijna can be divided into two subtypes with different etiologies. This is the first study to look at these two types of depression separately. Dr. Jussi Seppala of the Department of Psychiatry of the Hospital District of Southern Savo says: these findings have implications for the care of patients with depressive symptoms. For example, it is better to avoid weight gain medications in patients with non-melancholic depression. In contrast, patients with the melancholic subtype of depression may require a better diet.

Melancholic depression includes common depressive symptoms such as depressed mood. By contrast, non-melancholy is characterized by other symptoms, such as low self-esteem, feelings of dread and anxiety. In Finnish research it turned out that people with the highest folate consumption was as much as 50% less at risk of melancholic depression than patients with the lowest consumption. Additionally, those people who had the greatest vitamin B12 levels were 3 times less likely to experience melancholic depression than the ones with the lowest levels. Moreover, no link to non-melancholic depression has been established. On the other hand, with regard to the metabolic syndrome, it was found that the risk was twice as high in people with non-melancholic depression as compared to those who were free of the disease or suffered from symptoms of melancholy. The study appeared in Journal of Affective Disorders.
