The remarkable writer and critic Lidia Chukovskaya had a unique 15-year experience of close contact with Anna Akhmatova, with whom they turned out to be like-minded and friends in misfortune during the terrible period of repression. Three volumes of notes are not memoirs, but dialogues with Anna Andreevna, verbatim set out on paper in the hot pursuit of each meeting. Almost recorded in the diaries of Lydia Korneevna, the reality of those years — from 1938 to 1966 (with a 10-year break) — is then supplemented with detailed comments by the author. Notes has not been reprinted since 1997.
