Quetiapine is an organic chemical compound that is used as an antipsychotic medicine. It is used in the treatment of mental disorders, especially schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major and severe depressive episodes. Quetiapine is often used to combat insomnia and anxiety.
Quetiapine – action
All antipsychotics work in a similar way. The substances contained in them disrupt the work of dopaminergic D2 receptors in the central nervous system. This effect is desirable in a situation where the patient develops productive symptoms caused by excess dopamine in the mesolimbic system. Classic neuroleptics not only inhibit the activity of D2 receptors in this system, but also in other areas of the brain, where such a reduction may result in undesirable symptoms, the so-called extrapyramidal.
Another mechanism actions have atypical drugs, which include kwetiina. Most of this substance only affects the D2 receptors existing in the mesolimbic system. Antipsychotics affect the activities of individual adrenergic, serotonin, histaminergic and cholinergic receptors, which are particularly affected by atypical drugs. Thanks to this mechanism, dopaminergic activity is increased in the areas of the brain responsible for movement, which results in a lower possibility of side effects.
Quetiapine – contraindications
Main a contraindication for treatment quetiapine there is excessive sensitivity to this substance and neuroleptic malignant syndrome. In addition, special precautions should be taken in patients with deteriorating general mental state, suffering from cardiovascular problems, epilepsy, liver failure, suicidal thoughts or being in advanced age. Due to the lack of exhaustive research and the higher incidence side effects curative treatment is not recommended quetiapine in underage patients.
Quetiapine – side effects
Kwetiapina, due to its mechanism of action, it is usually well taken up by the body. In the initial stage of therapy, dizziness, fainting, lethargy or dry mouth may occur. Largely 2-4 weeks after starting taking these medication side effects they soften or disappear completely. Kwetiapina increases the possibility of diabetes and cardiac arrhythmias. It can also raise blood cholesterol levels. Unwanted symptoms extrapyramidals are rare, therefore kwetiina it is the most commonly prescribed neuroleptic drug in patients who are hypersensitive to antipsychotic substances.
Kwetiapine an alcohol
The combination of alcohol and quetiapine enhances the action of both substances. It is necessary to exercise extreme caution and consult a doctor, and for the period of treatment, you should completely abandon it alcoholic beverages.
