Krusovice beer: drink review, types, facts, history

The beer brand “Krušovice”, created in the village of the same name at the “Royal Brewery Krušovice”, is known as the “gold of the Czech crown”.

Since 2008, it has been owned by Heineken Corporation and, in addition to its own factory, is produced under license in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine.

History of the Krusovice brand

The first mention of the legendary brewery, located in the heart of the Czech Republic, dates back to the beginning of the XNUMXth century.

The founder of the plant is considered to be the aristocrat Jiri Birka, and the opening date is 1517.

In 1581, the enterprise was bought out by the ruler of the country, Rudolph II, who gave it the status of “royal” and decorated the gates with a symbol of power – a golden crown. The corresponding emblem appeared on the product packaging.

For many years, the “Royal Brewery Krusovice” produced drinks for the royal table.

The plant has survived many wars, upheavals, changes of owners and managers, but the tradition of brewing beer for the first government officials has been preserved – today Krušovice is the official beer supplied to Prague Castle – the residence of the head of the Czech Republic.

Especially successful for the famous brewery were the end of the XNUMXth century, marked by the receipt of a gold medal at the Zemstvo exhibition in Prague, and the second half of the XNUMXth century, when local drinks became famous far beyond the borders of the country.

In 1998, production volumes exceeded 1 million hectoliters.

Features of the production of beer Krusovice

The secret of Czech brewers lies in the choice of ingredients and the preservation of traditional recipes.

Water for brewing is extracted from the springs of the Křivoklát forests, barley malt is brought from Bohemia, hops are used exclusively from Saaz – varieties Žatecký poloraný červeňák and Premiant.

A variety of tastes is the merit of a competent choice and combination of several types of malt: caramel, burnt, Munich, light barley, wheat.

Interesting facts about Kruszowice beer

  1. In the XNUMXth century, the quality of Krušovice was checked in an original way: the brewer sat on a bench soaked with a hoppy product and waited for it to dry.

If the bench remained glued to the trousers when lifting, then the drink was considered worthy of tasting.

  2. No less original were the methods of “punishment” of unscrupulous workers.

In the first half of the XNUMXth century, when the noble Furstenberg family ran the brewery, lazy and careless employees were deprived of their favorite drink for a whole week.

  3. The Krušovice brewers were so dedicated to their craft that legends were made about them.

They say that one of the managers lived at the factory for 24 years, another went to bed right next to the barrels, a third wrote poems about an intoxicating drink, and several were completely kidnapped by the Swedes in order to find out the secrets of making a noble product.

  4. The Royal Brewery Kruszowice was one of the first among large factories to test the technology of “cold hopping”. With its help, light beer “Ležák” is produced.
