Listen to the voice of reason … and stomach! Before you – 16 golden rules for the arrangement of dining rooms.
Kitchen dining room in the house
Before taking on the design of the dining room, decide what is more important for you – to create a cozy atmosphere for home meals or to get rid of those extra pounds? The choice of furniture and interior colors depends on this. Red color enhances appetite – that’s why fast food owners love it so much! Blue, on the other hand, reduces hunger. The padded seats are relaxing and encourage eaters to spend more time at the table. Hard chairs and stools shorten meal times.
2) don’t neglect natural light
In country houses, the space near the stairs is often empty. It’s a shame, it’s perfect for a dining room. Especially if there is a skylight (lantern) above this place. Enjoy the first rays of the sun at breakfast and dine by the moon. To prevent the glare from dazzling your eyes on clear days, equip your lantern with a roller blind or remote-controlled blinds.
3. Before choosing a table, count the eaters!
They love round tables for their convenience and democracy: there are no disputes over a place of honor at the head of the table and no one has to sit on the corner. However, it is suitable only for a small family: if six to eight people regularly gather at a meal, a rectangular table is preferable. An oval table is a good compromise.
4 use large patterns
If you don’t want your guests to sit gloomily at the plates all evening, make sure that there is something to catch your eye in the interior of the dining room. A good option is wallpaper or textiles with a large pattern. (For example, fabrics by French Art Deco designer Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann, reprinted by Prelle.) In the dining room, they will not be as fatiguing to the eyes as in the bedroom or living room.
5. Don’t be afraid of bottlenecks!
Traditionally, the dining table is located in the center of the room, but if the room does not allow access to the table from all sides, move the entire furniture group against the wall, using a sofa or bench as a seat. Roll up this wall with slate paint, stock up on colored crayons – and you can exchange messages with your household. In such a “brisk” place, your messages will not go unnoticed.
6 get closer to nature
A meal in the bosom of nature lifts your spirits and relieves stress. So don’t miss the opportunity to place your dining room in a room overlooking the garden or balcony! Floor-length windows will help blur the line between the street and the house. Do not be afraid to use “rough” natural materials in the decoration of the dining room – for example, croaker or wild stone. Combined with modern furniture, they will look like art objects.
7. Don’t overdo it with textiles!
When decorating a dining room, it is better to do with a minimum of fabric products – carpets, curtains and furniture upholstery absorb food odors too actively. If a room without textiles seems uncomfortable to you, give preference to products that can be washed in a machine. A spectacular move: pick up objects not only in the same scale, but also with identical patterns (for example, the famous black and white Geometri carpet by Werner Panton and a tablecloth with circles).
8 look under your feet
If the dining room is combined with a kitchen or living room, floor coverings of different textures and colors will help to zone the space. Remember! Marble is not very suitable for a dining room (stains from spilled Coca-Cola will remain with you forever) and parquet (scratches from fallen forks are guaranteed). Ceramic tiles or the now fashionable concrete are more practical.
9. Experiment with light.
The dining room should have several light sources, and it is better if all of them are equipped with dimmers. By adjusting the brightness of the light, you can create the right atmosphere for a dinner party or a romantic dinner with a light flick of your hand. The main thing is not to confuse!
10 optimize your route
Say a resolute “no” to the fussy running from the kitchen to the dining room and back. The number of movements between them can and should be minimized. It makes sense to store dishes that are used only on special occasions in the dining room – it will be easier to set the table before a dinner party. A console or a serving table will make life easier for the owners, where you can put dishes whose turn has not yet come: you will not have to scramble and, interrupting the conversation in mid-sentence, rush to the kitchen for dessert.
11. Don’t hide your collection
In the old days, the walls of dining rooms were decorated with portraits of the owners and their ancestors up to the seventh generation. In a modern interior, any work of art, including avant-garde art objects, can take the place of family heirlooms. The main thing is that they do not spoil the appetite of either you or your guests.
12. play with reflections
Some people do not like to contemplate their chewing physiognomy while eating. But this is not a reason to give up mirrors in the dining room. Dishes, candles and flowers reflected in the mirror greatly enhance the feeling of food abundance and well-being.
13 don’t sacrifice comfort for the exotic
Japanese minimalism is at the height of fashion, but there is, sitting on the floor and tucking his legs under him, as the inhabitants of the Land of the Rising Sun do, our person is not very comfortable. If the ceiling height allows, build a podium with a notch under the table, where you can hang your legs. Don’t forget to put a mat on the floors.
14 paint on the walls
Is your dining room too small and cramped? Don’t give up, all is not lost yet! Wall murals will help prevent an epidemic of claustrophobia among households. Give preference to bright colors and active, energetic lines. To avoid unnecessary variegation, pick up furniture and lamps that echo in color with the paintings.
15. combine the incongruous
A dining room furnished in the same style (especially a historical one) often looks too boring. So that, while having dinner with your family, you do not feel like at a reception at the embassy, you can slightly reduce the degree of formality: for example, “mix” chairs in different styles.
16. don’t be afraid of versatility
The principle of Professor Preobrazhensky – “you need to eat in the dining room, work in the office, and sleep in the bedroom” is less and less relevant these days. If the dining room is idle most of the time, it has an unpleasant spirit of desolation inherent in non-residential premises, says British design guru and restaurateur Terence Conran. It is better to immediately provide for an additional function for it – for example, to combine the dining room with a library or study.
