Kitchen design in modern style 2022: 15 best photos
Find out the latest trends and rules for designing a kitchen in a modern style

The kitchen is by far the most visited room in the house. It starts and ends the day. Therefore, you need to draw it up especially carefully, taking into account all the features of the room and your lifestyle.

Modern Kitchen Design Options in 2022

A modern kitchen is a combination of functionality, new technologies, interesting textures and geometric shapes. Current trends do not imply any clear framework.

The originality, originality and uniqueness of the interior comes to the fore. At the same time, spaciousness and simplicity are very relevant. The kitchen should give a feeling of comfort and coziness.

Of the finishing materials, the most popular are wood, stone, concrete and other natural textures. They always make the interior more “luxurious” and multifaceted. The most winning colors are natural natural shades: white, gray, beige, black, deep green and blue.

Kitchen-living room design in a modern style

The combined kitchen-living room today is not a newfangled trend, but a rather popular planning solution. Zoning in such rooms can be done in several ways: using a partition, a kitchen island, a bar counter and other furniture.

You can also visually highlight each zone with the help of various floor coverings and color blocks.

The style of the kitchen-living room can be anything. Modern trends involve a mixture of styles and an individual approach.

If you are designing the space yourself, try to follow a few rules:

  • all shades in the interior should be combined with each other – both in the kitchen area and in the living room area;
  • in order for the room to look unified, elements of different styles must be present in each zone;
  • the space should not be overloaded with details and accents.

Design of a small kitchen in a modern style

Not every apartment has a large kitchen, especially in older houses. But this does not mean at all that it will not work to create a functional and stylish interior. With proper zoning, selection of furniture and accessories, even in a tiny kitchen you can be comfortable and cozy.

First of all, pay attention to the color scheme. Light shades will visually make the space larger, and this is very important in small rooms. It is better to “dissolve” kitchen facades in space as much as possible, this can be done by painting them in the same color as the walls.

Place the kitchen set along the walls, and make the upper cabinets up to the ceiling. Try to get rid of “visual noise” as much as possible: the more items will be on the surface of the kitchen, the messier it will look.

Also pay special attention to lighting: in small rooms there should be a lot of it.

Corner kitchen in modern style

Corner kitchen – the most common layout option. It is great for compact spaces, as the furniture is located immediately along two adjacent walls. If you order a set with cabinets up to the ceiling, you will have a lot of storage space for various dishes and utensils. It is also a great solution for studio apartments, in which the kitchen is always combined with the living room.

From the point of view of ergonomics, the corner layout also has its advantages: the refrigerator, stove and sink can be placed according to the triangle rule – at an equal distance from each other. This is very convenient, because everything will always be at hand. If desired, you can install a kitchen set with a bar counter, which will serve as an additional workplace and a small dining table.

The corner kitchen has its drawbacks. For example, a headset of this shape is difficult to integrate into a space of a non-standard shape. Any ledges, niches and uneven walls can become an obstacle to its placement. Also, corner cabinets involve the installation of retractable structures, which are much more expensive than classic shelves. But without them it will be inconvenient to get something from the depths of the cabinet.

Modern kitchen design in bright colors

The kitchen, decorated in bright colors, looks spacious and comfortable. White, beige, gray and other muted tones work well for rooms of any size and stylistic direction.

If you want to create an interior “for many years”, then light colors are your ideal option. When choosing furniture facades, give preference to the most functional and concise models, without unnecessary details and decorations. Household appliances can be matched to the tone of the headset, or, conversely, made more contrasting. To decorate the walls of a bright kitchen, you can use different finishing materials: decorative plaster, paint, wallpaper, tiles, gypsum panels.

Accessories and textiles will help add some color to a bright kitchen: curtains, lamps, upholstery, dishes, napkins. And to make the interior more interesting and multifaceted, you can add additional textures: stone, wood, metal, leather.

Modern kitchen design in a private house

The design of the kitchen in a private house has its own specifics. A large area, the lack of a typical layout and other features – something that must be taken into account when arranging the interior.

The kitchen is usually divided into working and guest areas. Visually, zoning can be done using additional color, texture or lighting. If it is possible to put a kitchen set by the window, be sure to use it. So you will have a lot of natural light and a beautiful landscape before your eyes.

The design style of the kitchen in a private house can be anything. You can realize your wildest desires. It can be a monotonous light interior with minimalist furniture and a lot of “air”. Or a bold and dark version with brutal elements.

Popular questions and answers

What are the main differences between modern style and classical style?
Victoria Shevtsova, Design Project Manager for the category “Kitchens” “Leroy Merlin”:

“Modern style is far from strict norms, its system is more flexible, so it allows for a mixture of directions. The modern style is characterized by simplicity and the absence of complex elements, clear lines, eclecticism, a lot of free space, cleanliness and order in everything, ergonomics, proper organization of places for storing products, the presence of modern technology, thoughtfulness of each element of furniture.

Natalia Kozyreva, Head of Commercial Real Estate Leasing at TC Mebel-City:

“The concept of “modern” in relation to kitchen design can be quite loose. A modern kitchen interior necessarily combines comfort, ease of use, trendy color combinations, as well as the preservation of free space and straight lines. Therefore, such trends as minimalism, hi-tech or loft can be modern style.

The main differences from the classics are restraint, focus on the simplicity of forms and color combinations. The classic style loves luxury in details, rich colors, such a kitchen is characterized by the use of only natural and decorated materials for them. Wood massifs, details from a natural stone are used. Also in classic kitchens, complex chandeliers with decor, painted shades are often installed, which you will not find in a modern style. Chandeliers for the kitchen in a modern style are elegant lines, matte shades, or built-in lights.”

Oksana Kostyuchenko, architect, head of the architectural bureau:

“Today, the topic of modern solutions is especially popular in interiors. These are smooth, minimalist surfaces of furniture, monochrome drawings or light abstraction in textile design, strict and even forms of the entire space. Modern style, as such, also includes technological solutions in lighting, in solutions for controlling light, heating and other amenities called “smart home”.

What materials are used to decorate the kitchen in a modern style?
Victoria Shevtsova, Design Project Manager for the category “Kitchens” “Leroy Merlin”:

“Modern styles combine minimalism with practicality. In the production of kitchen furniture, the following materials are used: solid wood, chipboard / chipboard, MDF and multiplex.

Solid wood is the most expensive and “gentle” material. The structure of the wood is quite soft, so it can be easily damaged. Wooden kitchens are characteristic of the classic style, but wood looks no less attractive in a loft-style setting.

Chipboard is based on pressed and glued chips. This is a durable and inexpensive material, but unstable to moisture and high temperatures. In the production of kitchen sets, it is used for frames or facades.

When creating MDF boards, small wood chips are used, which are pressed with the addition of a special resin. MDF is stronger than wood and chipboard, is not afraid of water, is less harmful than chipboard. In the price segment, this is the golden mean between an expensive array and cheap chipboard.

The basis of the multiplex is natural wood. These are thin layers of wood glued together. The multiplex is environmentally friendly, is not afraid of moisture, is not affected by temperature changes, and at the same time is cheaper than an array.”

Natalia Kozyreva, Head of Commercial Real Estate Leasing at TC Mebel-City:

“Modern style makes it possible to use combinations of different finishing materials. It can be plastic, metal, glass, natural wood, stone and even ceramics. Most importantly, most of the surfaces should be simple, of high quality and practical.

Kitchen set in a modern style, as a rule, is built into a niche. There are high cabinets-pencil cases, in which household appliances are built. The surface of the facades is usually smooth, matte or glossy. For cabinets and drawers, instead of handles, the push-to-open opening system is often chosen.

An economical option for a modern kitchen set will be chipboard facades lined with acrylic or plastic. MDF will cost a little more, but its appearance will be much more attractive. The advantage of MDF is that it is an environmentally friendly material. The decorative coating of the plate can be made of enamel paint, veneer, plastic. The most relevant colors in the design of modern kitchens are white, gray, black, brown, as well as muted shades of blue and green.

Oksana Kostyuchenko, architect, head of the architectural bureau:

“Furniture fronts for kitchen solutions are usually made from MDF. Lacquer, matte surface or wood veneer will help to achieve the style of “modern eco” or a modern loft. In my practice, there were also spectacular glass facades, painted in bulk, with a “handleless” opening, and even mirrored. Glass, now produced very unusual, which does not leave fingerprints. As well as mirrored facades, which are opened by selecting minimalist fittings.”

Which sink to choose for a kitchen in a modern design?
Victoria Shevtsova, Design Project Manager for the category “Kitchens” “Leroy Merlin”:

“When choosing a sink, you need to focus on quality, functionality, appearance and budget. It must meet criteria such as capacity, resistance to aggressive substances contained in household chemicals, strength and ability to withstand a variety of mechanical loads, resistance to a possible range of temperature fluctuations, and it must also correspond to the chosen style and concept.

The modern kitchen is characterized by clear geometric shapes and additional functions: a liquid dispenser, a colander, and the possibility of fastening. If the kitchen is small, it is worth installing a round recessed or square sink with one bowl. This form will make it possible to increase the usable area of the countertop. If the size of the kitchen allows, it is better to choose a sink with two bowls. It is convenient to put the washed dishes in the second bowl so that it dries properly. In addition, the second compartment is useful for cleaning vegetables, fish and for defrosting food.

The most common sink materials are stainless steel and artificial stone. Stainless steel is a more practical and affordable option, which is still inferior to artificial stone in terms of aesthetic properties.”

Natalia Kozyreva, Head of Commercial Real Estate Leasing at TC Mebel-City:

“Sink in such a kitchen is better to choose classic shapes, square or rectangular. It is not only beautiful and simple, but also very convenient. The color will largely depend on the main kitchen palette. In terms of materials, stainless steel and stone without a pronounced pattern would be good choices.”

Oksana Kostyuchenko, architect, head of the architectural bureau:

“Sinks in modern kitchens are, as a rule, undermounted and made of stainless steel. But if the customer’s budget allows, we make sinks from the same stone as the countertop itself.”

Which worktop is suitable for a modern style kitchen?
Victoria Shevtsova, Design Project Manager for the category “Kitchens” “Leroy Merlin”:

“The tabletop is the most used part of any headset. The working surface is made from: MDF / chipboard, artificial / natural stone, solid wood.

MDF / chipboard top covered with a film is the most economical and moisture resistant option. The lined plate has greater strength and reliability.

The work surface made of artificial stone has a spectacular, presentable look. It has no visible seams, it is resistant to impacts and aggressive components. But such countertops are easily scratched.

Wood countertops are not as resistant to external factors. They are afraid of water and scratch easily. Temperature fluctuations can deform the tree, it is more difficult to care for the surface of the tables. The choice in favor of wood is made because of its beauty, environmental friendliness and presentable appearance.”

Natalia Kozyreva, Head of Commercial Real Estate Leasing at TC Mebel-City

“Worktops made of natural or artificial stone look very advantageous in the design of a modern kitchen. The use of wood and laminated boards is also allowed. The choice of countertop material is based on the budget, and its color depends on the kitchen itself. You can put a color accent on the table top, or make it in the main color by choosing another object as an accent.

Oksana Kostyuchenko, architect, head of the architectural bureau:

“Artificial stone is a common product in the kitchen market, but I would recommend looking at ceramic countertops and sinks, as well as such an impeccable solution as quartzite. It looks especially impressive if, in addition to the cooking zone, the kitchen island is also framed.

Now the solutions of countertops and hob, coupled with a sink of a single plane and from a homogeneous material, are very relevant – this can be done in large-format porcelain stoneware, quartzite and ceramics.
