About Killepitsch
If you love to travel and have been to Düsseldorf at least once, then you are definitely lucky enough to try the amazing Killepich liqueur.
Loosely translated, Killepitsch means “killer swill”, which is justified by its strength, since it exceeds the strength of vodka. And this is one of the few liqueurs that can be safely called a real man’s drink.
Liquor is made by distilling 98 herbs, flowers, berries and various spices, which enrich the drink with an incredible aroma and saturate it with a red-brown color.
Purified alcohol is used as an alcoholic component, which makes the herbal liqueur very strong, 42%. Caramel taste turns into sweet bitterness with a touch of molasses, and mint, which is part of the liqueur, balances this bitterness and makes it softer.
The bottle is transparent and allows you to see the real color of the drink. The bottle and label bear the date 1858 (this is the year the liquor factory was founded). It also features a portrait of the founder of the factory, Peter Bush.
The history of the creation of liquor
Since the Second World War, two best friends of the famous writer Hans Müller-Schlesser and the distiller Willy Busch have been hiding in one of the bomb shelters.
Being there for more than one month, food supplies ran out, and the fear of not getting out of there alive increased. And in order to somehow cope with their fears, the friends drank alcohol, but when he was already drunk, Hans asked Willy to prepare some of the strong drinks himself. But he was refused, because in wartime there was a ban on the production of alcoholic beverages.
The experienced distiller promised his friend that if they got out of the bunker alive, he would prepare a special drink for him that would make him shudder at first, and then close his eyes with pleasure.
And now, 10 years later, in 1955, the writer received an invitation to open the Et Kabuffke bar, which looked more like a closet. And on this day, Willy Bush presented his friend with Killepitsch liqueur.
This bar continues to operate at the same place in Düsseldorf, where you can buy the famous liquor “on tap” and drink a glass or two right on the go.
In 2005, Willy’s grandson Peter Busch opened the new factory Likörfabrik Peter Busch, with walls made of dark glass, and anyone can watch the production process.
The culture of drinking liquor
This drink belongs to the digestif, as it is very strong for an aperitif.
It is customary to drink killepitsch from small 30-gram shot glasses in its pure form, immediately after the feast.
For example, in Germany, this herbal balm is served with baked pork knuckle.
In addition, the alcohol we are considering can be added to hot drinks (tea or coffee).
Don’t forget that it’s also a great cocktail ingredient and can replace Jägermeister in some of them.
